Tijjani Reijnders to score anytime
Tijjani Reijnders was hugely impressive on his City debut at Wolves, scoring and dominating midfield, so it would not be a surprise if he hit the target again in his first match at the Etihad.
Micky van de Ven to have 2+ shots
After recording two shots in their opener, van de Ven is a real threat against City. He scored against PSG in the Super Cup, a game where Spurs played more reactively and focused on set pieces. That should see the defender have a couple of efforts in this clash.
Nico Gonzalez to be carded
Gonzalez was booked six times in 17 league games for Porto last term, while he picked up a further three Premier League bookings after a January switch to City. With Reijnders expected to push forward, Gonzalez will find himself staying back against a Spurs side who will play on the counter.
Manchester City vs Tottenham Hotspur Predictions
- Tottenham have scored a total of 12 goals on their last four visits to the Etihad
- Manchester City have lost one of their last 11 home league games
- Five of City’s last seven matches have featured more than three goals
Sours should contribute to entertaining spectacle
Manchester City followers will have been relieved to have seen the quality with which they dispatched Wolves in their opening Premier League game of the campaign on Saturday and that sets them up for what should be an entertaining clash with Tottenham.
The Citizens were humbled 4-0 at home to Spurs in what was one of the north London outfit’s most impressive results under Ange Postecoglou and the visitors will fancy their chances after they saw off promote Burnley 3-0 in their opener.
That came after they were pegged back by two late goals and then fell in a Super Cup penalty shootout against Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain, but the quality of that performance when they went toe-to-toe with Europe’s best team should provide Thomas Frank’s side with the confidence they can match anyone.
Spurs should definitely provide more of a test for the City defence and Richarlison epitomised their belief levels with two goals against the Clarets when he has perhaps not been seen at his best in a Tottenham shirt.
Spurs have never been afraid to push forward when visiting the Citizens and Brighton were the only team to finish in the top nine last season who conceded more home goals than Pep Guardiola’s side.
City attack can just prove the difference
With five of City’s last seven matches containing more than three goals, there looks a strong chance that pattern will continue.
The prolific Erling Haaland is already off the mark with two at Molineux and while Tottenham appear to have more stability than they did when Postecoglou was in charge, this is one of the toughest test they will face this season.
Spurs are capable of playing a full role in proceedings in a game that should generate at least four goals, and correct-score enthusiasts are pointed towards a 3-2 home victory as Guardiola’s extra forward resources look to tip the balance in their favour.
Reijnders is one to watch
While it was no surprise to see Haaland immediately back among the goals, one player who stood out for City at Molineux was new midfielder Tijjani Reijnders, who scored the second goal in their 4-0 success.
The Dutchman was the driving force in the middle of the park and there looks a strong chance that he will contribute greatly in the final third during the course of the season.
The former AC Milan player will be delighted to have opened his account and it would not be a surprise if he shone again and scored another goal as he features in front of his home supporters for the first time.
