Philadelphia Union vs Columbus Crew Predictions

Philadelphia Union managed to get a fairly impressive result at the weekend as they avoided defeat against MLS Western Conference leaders Colorado Rapids and earned themselves a point thanks to a 92nd minute equaliser after going behind five minutes before.

This extended their unbeaten streak to seven matches in the MLS, but five of those games have ended all square as the team struggle to collect all three points.

They have only lost three of their 13 matches this season to be fair to them, and that has been enough to take them to the top of the MLS Eastern Conference. However, a return of 20 points from 13 matches isn’t overly impressive, and it’s largely thanks to the poor form of the entire Eastern Conference that they have managed to reach the summit. By way of comparison, the top six in the Western Conference all have at least 20 points to their names.

Columbus Crew have managed to break out of their poor run of form at the beginning of the campaign and began to put together a somewhat decent run of results. The most impressive was their 4-3 win over the in form Real Salt Lake at the weekend.

This ended their four match winless streak in the MLS and extended their unbeaten streak to four matches, meaning that the previous three games all ended as draws. They have only lost one of their last seven in the MLS, but their form at the beginning of the season was so poor that they will find themselves way down in 9th position.

Columbus Crew are only six points adrift of the leaders in the division though, and they do have at least a game in hand over every team above them in the Eastern Conference.

Their away form will be worrying them though. They remain winless on the road this season having lost three and drawn three of their six games, whilst Philadelphia Union are unbeaten at home and have won four of their six outings at the Talen Energy Stadium.

Backing a straight up Philadelphia Union win looks profitable, but I think there’s more value to be had here. The hosts have kept three clean sheets in their six home games so far this season and are facing a Columbus Crew side who have failed to score in their last three away games and have only found the net twice on the road this season. They have also had two goalless draws on the road, meaning they have it in them to defend as well. This makes odds of 23/20 for Both Teams Not to Score look incredibly good value, and I’m backing that along with a 1-0 win the Philadelphia Union at 15/2.
