Co-hosts Canada are the second-favourite to land the Group B top spot behind Switzerland, but it is far from a done deal with home advantage in play, and a relatively well-matched top three teams make this an interesting group to watch. All three should comfortably beat rank outsiders Qatar, and that may be enough to see Switzerland, Canada, and Bosnia-Herzegovina through to the knockout stages.

Group B guide
Canada
Overview
Canada qualified for their first World Cup since the 1980s in 2022, and they return for a third finals appearance as co-hosts in North America. They have lost all six of their World Cup fixtures, conceding 12 goals in the process, but they will be hoping for a better showing with the home crowd on their side.
Strengths
The likes of Alphonso Davies and Jonathan David may catch the headlines, but Canada’s defence could carry them. They have conceded just three goals in their last nine games, including clean sheets against Ecuador, Colombia, and Wales.
Weaknesses
Despite the talent in the attacking ranks, Canada have failed to score in four of their last nine, and star-man Alphonso Davies will miss the opening match at the very least.
Prospects
With a disciplined defensive setup and home advantage on their side, top spot in Group B is not beyond the realms of possibility. If they can maintain their structure and Davies recovers in time for the latter stages, a run to the last 16 is possible.
Team guide
Best World Cup finish: Group stage (1986, 2022)
Key player: Alphonso Davies
Rising star: Ismael Kone
Canada predicted lineup (4-2-3-1): Crepeau; Johnston, Bombito, Cornelius, Laryea; Eustaquio, Kone; Buchanan, David, Millar; Larin
Best Bet – Jonathan David top team goalscorer
Canada’s two leading all-time goalscorers are expected to start this World Cup, and it is Juventus attacker Jonathan David who is likely to prove the most threatening. Second-place Cyle Larin has scored just two goals since the start of 2024, while David has managed 13 in the same period, including a brace against Iceland in March.
Switzerland
Overview
Switzerland were one of eight European countries to qualify for the 2026 World Cup unbeaten as they topped a group containing Kosovo, Slovenia, and Sweden and they will take a wealth of experience to North America, with captain Granit Xhaka expected to feature in his fourth World Cup.
Strengths
Switzerland have quality and experience all over the pitch, with the vast majority of their squad plying their trade in Europe’s top five leagues. Combined with plenty of international experience, this makes Nati by far the most balanced side in Group B.
Weaknesses
While the squad as a whole is talented, balanced, and experienced, there is a lack of star quality. The absence of a player who can turn a game on its head means they can struggle when faced with stubborn opposition.
Prospects
Top spot is there for the taking for Switzerland, but they have shown time and time again that they lack the quality to make it to the latter stages of the tournament. That is unlikely to change this summer.
Team guide
Best World Cup finish: Quarter-finals (1934, 1938, 1954)
Key player: Granit Xhaka
Rising star: Johan Manzambi
Switzerland predicted lineup (4-3-3): Kobel; Widmer, Elvedi, Akanji, Rodriguez; Freuler, Xhaka, Sow; Ndoye, Embolo, Vargas
Best Bet: Switzerland to be eliminated in the last 16 at 12/5
Switzerland are justified favourites to top Group B, but they haven’t made it beyond the last 16 since they hosted the 1954 World Cup. They have been eliminated in the round-of-16 tie in five of their last six World Cup appearances, including each of the last three editions.
Bosnia-Herzegovina
Overview
Led by the 40-year-old Edin Dzeko as he closes in on his 150th cap for his country, Bosnia-Herzegovina upset the odds to beat both Wales and Italy to qualify for only their second World Cup finals. They may be outsiders to win Group B, but they bring a promising balance of youth and experience to the tournament and may be a bigger threat than many expect.
Strengths
Bosnia-Herzegovina showed the sort of grit that makes a big difference in tournament football with penalty wins over Wales and Italy in the World Cup play-offs. They are a tough side to beat, and that puts them in good standing against the slight favourites, Switzerland and Canada.
Weaknesses
Edin Dzeko is the only member of the Bosnia-Herzegovina squad to have more than five international goals, and their over-reliance on a 40-year-old for their goals could be an issue with such a congested schedule.
Prospects
Bosnia-Herzegovina have proven a difficult side to beat over the past year, but they can struggle to win games when faced with more compact defensive units. With Qatar in the group, they should get through to the knockout stages with a draw against either Canada or Switzerland, but may be reliant on penalties to get any further than the last 32.
Team guide
Best World Cup finish: Group stage (2014)
Key player: Edin Dzeko
Rising star: Kerim Alajbegovic
Bosnia-Herzegovina predicted lineup (4-4-2): Vasilj; Dedic, Katic, Muharemovic, Kolasinac; Bajraktarevic, Tahirovic, Sunjic, Memic; Demirovic, Dzeko
Best Bet – Bosnia-Herzegovina to win Group B at 13/5
Bosnia-Herzegovina may be less reliable than favourites Switzerland, but their play-off results over Wales and Italy illustrate their ability to take on all comers and that could make them worth a punt against the odds. They should beat Qatar comfortably and, on their day, they are more than capable of getting results against Canada and Switzerland.
Qatar
Overview
After appearing in their first World Cup as host-nation in 2022, Qatar return this summer despite a difficult qualifying campaign. They finished fourth in the third round of Asian qualification before beating UAE and Oman in the fourth stage, but they are winless in four games and, with all but one of their players plying their trade in the domestic league, it will be an uphill battle for the 33/1 outsiders.
Strengths
There is a huge amount of experience in this Qatar squad, with six of their squad having over 100 caps to their name. Many of them are also domestic teammates, so team unity should not be a problem.
Weaknesses
There is a severe lack of quality all over the pitch, which has been illustrated by defeats to Tunisia, Palestine, and Zimbabwe in the past year. They will struggle both going forward and at the back against their Group B opponents.
Prospects
With a relatively difficult group to navigate, Qatar fans will just be hoping their side can make life difficult for their more talented counterparts. A win would be cause for a huge celebration.
Team guide
Best World Cup finish: Group stage (2022)
Key player: Almoez Ali
Rising star: Ibrahim Al-Hassan
Qatar predicted lineup (4-4-2): Barsham; Al Qui, Miguel, Khoukhi, Al Brake; Hatem, Madibo, Boudiaf, Afif; Al Mannai, Ali
Best Bet – Qatar to finish bottom of Group B
Qatar lost all three of their World Cup games on home soil four years ago, and this summer may see a repeat of that against three relatively strong opponents. They lost to Tunisia and Palestine and drew with Syria in December’s Arab Cup and their squad looks on a much lower level than their Group B competitors.
