Tournament favourites Spain aren’t expected to face much opposition in Group H, while two-time winners Uruguay are also well-positioned to make the next round. However, Saudi Arabia shocked Argentina in 2022, and Cape Verde arrive having made two recent Africa Cup of Nations runs.

Group H guide

Spain

Overview

The European champions could be beginning a new period of dominance in international football, with a star-studded squad led by 18-year-old Lamine Yamal. Luis de la Fuente has made some bold calls, but his side arguably look stronger than they did two years ago.

Strengths

Spain stormed to glory at Euro 2024 with a blend of their usual technical excellence and incredible directness out wide. Not only do they have a deep squad and a group of proven winners, but de la Fuente’s decision not to call up any Real Madrid players should be good for the dressing room atmosphere.

Weaknesses

It’s hard to identify weaknesses in a squad where Arsenal and Barcelona’s starting goalkeepers are expected to both warm the bench. They don’t have quite the same strength in depth up front, but Mikel Oyarzabal helps to bring the best out of Yamal and Williams.

Prospects

The tournament favourites are expected to go on a deep run, and their first big test is expected to come against Belgium in the last eight. Germany or France could await in the semis, but Spain eliminated both at Euro 2024.

Team guide

Best World Cup finish: Winners (2010)

Key player: Lamine Yamal

Rising star: Pau Cubarsi

Spain predicted lineup (4-3-3): Simon; Llorente, Laporte, Cubarsi, Cucurella; Rodri, Pedri, Ruiz; Yamal, Williams, Oyarzabal

Best Bet – Spain to reach the semi-finals at 11/8

After last 16 exits at the last two tournaments, Spain are much better positioned heading into this tournament. Barring some group shocks, their draw looks very kind through to the last four, so they look good for a run to the semi-finals at least.

Uruguay

Overview

Two-time winners Uruguay turned to Marcelo Bielsa after their struggles in Qatar. He led them to a win in Argentina in qualifying and a penalty shoot-out victory over Brazil in 2024’s Copa America. However, they’ve won only five of 18 games since.

Strengths

In full flight, Bielsa’s football is incredible to watch, and it could overwhelm their opponents in the group stage. His side are also tough to beat, they lost only four of their 18 matches in South American qualifying.

Weaknesses

Gone are the days of Edinson Cavani, Luis Suarez, and Diego Forlan leading the charge for Uruguay. They’ve got some great options in midfield, and a typically physical defence, but Darwin Nunez hasn’t got much of a supporting cast in attack.

Prospects

Uruguay have enough talent to progress from the group stage, with Bielsa aiming to improve on a group stage exit with Argentina in 2002 and a last 16 finish with Chile in 2010. However, he could run into his home country in the first knockout round if Argentina top Group J.

Team guide

Best World Cup finish: Winners (1930, 1950)

Key player: Federico Valverde

Rising star:  Juan Manuel Sanabria

Uruguay predicted lineup (4-3-3): Rochet; Nandez, Araujo, Gimenez, Olivera; Valverde, Ugarte, de Arrascaeta; Pellistri, Araujo, Aguirre

Best Bet – Stage of elimination – last 32 at 11/10

With Argentina looming, Uruguay aren’t expected to make it too far into the knockout stages. Tensions between Bielsa and the squad appear to be bubbling up, but they should still have enough to make it through the group stage.

Saudi Arabia

Overview

The 2034 tournament hosts face their first World Cup since the Saudi Pro League boom. Despite claiming a surprise victory against Argentina at the last World Cup, they failed to make it out of the group stage for the third tournament running.

Strengths

The hope is that their Pro League investment and strict domestic quotas have helped to improve their squad. Many of the key names from 2022 return, and new manager Georgios Donis is expected to stick with a safety-first approach in clashes with Spain and Uruguay.

Weaknesses

Former Blackburn Rovers midfielder Donis was brought in to replace Herve Renard, who was sacked 59 days shy of the tournament. That decision came a shaky qualifying campaign, as they suffered four defeats in a single campaign for the first time since qualifying for the 1982 tournament.

Prospects

Their final game with Cape Verde offers Saudi Arabia a shot at finishing third, and potentially making the next round. Their shock win over Argentina four years ago wasn’t something they were able to follow up on, but if they can take anything from their opening two games this time around, then they should be well-positioned to progress.

Team guide

Best World Cup finish: Last 16 (1994)

Key player: Salem Al-Dawsari

Rising star: Musab Al-Juwayr

Saudi Arabia predicted lineup (4-3-3): Al-Aqidi; Abdulhamid, Thakri, Al-Tambakti, Boushal; Al-Juwayr, Nasser Al-Dawsari, Kanno; Al-Hamdan, Salem Al-Dawsari, Al-Buraikan

Best Bet – Salem Al-Dawsari to be top team goalscorer at 7/1

Al-Dawsari scored two of Saudi Arabia’s three goals at the 2022 World Cup, and the Al-Hilal forward also found the net in Russia at the 2018 tournament. He had a hand in 16 goals for his club side during the previous Pro League season, and he should be key to everything they do at this tournament.

Cape Verde

Overview

Cape Verde topped a group containing Cameroon to secure their maiden World Cup appearance. They fell short of qualifying for last year’s Africa Cup of Nations, but they did reach the quarter-finals at the 2023 edition. Their 26-man squad features players based across 13 countries, from Villarreal’s Logan Costa to Shamrock Rovers defender Pico.

Strengths

Cape Verde built on impressive showings at AFCON in 2021 and 2023 in their World Cup qualifying campaign, and they have a squad with a good mix of youth and experience. Their ability to target foreign-born eligible players has helped, with no fewer than six members of their squad born in Rotterdam alone.

Weaknesses

Cape Verde are the second-smallest nation to ever qualify for the World Cup, and their recruitment drive has still left them short on talent to compete with the world’s best. Their squad is also expected to be among the oldest at a tournament that will likely be defined by extreme heat, and that could take a toll.

Prospects

Qualifying for the tournament is a landmark moment for Cape Verde, and an incredible achievement by a squad that has done hard yards in international football. Facing the European champions in their opening game is a huge reward for this group, and their travelling support should help make their group matches a real occasion.

Team guide

Best World Cup finish: N/A (Debut)

Key player: Logan Costa

Rising star: Sidny Lopes Cabral

Cape Verde predicted lineup (4-2-3-1): Vozinha; Moreira, Costa, Lopes, Joao Paulo; Pina, Semedo; Mendes, Monteiro, Semedo; Livramento

Best Bet – Cape Verde to be the lowest scoring team at 10/1

Cape Verde’s best shot at scoring is against a defensively sound Saudi Arabia side, while they should struggle for possession in clashes with Spain and Uruguay. Their top scorer in qualifying, Dailon Livramento, failed to score a league goal for Casa Pia this term.
