2023 Women’s World Cup outright predictions

England to win at 9/2

England was gripped with women’s football fever last summer when Sarina Wiegman’s Lionesses won the Euros and that frenzy could be pushed up a notch in the next few weeks as they have an excellent chance of winning their first World Cup, which starts July 20.

The absence of skipper Leah Williamson and Euros top goalscorer Beth Mead is a blow but they still look well placed to head back from Australia and New Zealand as the new champions of the globe.

They are second-favourites for the big prize behind the USA, who beat them in the semi-finals in France four years ago and are aiming to win the trophy for the third successive occasion.

The pair are not due to meet until the final this time and England can take a great deal of confidence from their 2-1 win over the USWNT at Wembley in October.

England’s 2-0 defeat at Brentford against Australia in April was their first loss in four years and, despite those key absences, they could be the value.

The Americans may have a hangover from the Olympics, where they were beaten in a group match by Sweden and didn’t live up to the hype, losing to Canada in the semi-finals before taking a disappointing bronze medal.

If they fluff their lines again, the Lionesses could be waiting to pounce and history may beckon.

China to qualify from Group D at 2/1

If America’s Tokyo experience was bad then China’s was a disaster as they lost 5-0 to Brazil and 8-2 to the Netherlands.

However, coach Jia Xiuquan has been jettisoned and they look a lot stronger under Shui Qingxia.

To many people’s surprise, they bounced back to win the Asian Cup, seeing off Japan on penalties and beating South Korea with an injury-time goal in the final.

They have never failed to get through the group stage in six World Cups – they lost in the 1999 final – and they could build on that strong performance in India to qualify alongside England in Group D.

Canada to win Group B at 2/1

There will be plenty of pressure on Australia to do well and they may just struggle to live up to the expectation.

Ireland and Nigeria may not be the strongest of Group B rivals, but Canada could give them plenty of problems, especially after winning a couple of friendlies against the Matildas down under a few months ago.

The Olympic champions could be dark horses for the tournament, but with Australia odds-on to top the group and the pair not meeting until the last game, there is value in backing Canada to come out on top of the section.

2pts England to win the Women’s World Cup
1pt China to qualify from Group D,
Canada to win Group B
