A fantastic US Open for us saw us land both the men and women’s winners this year, courtesy of Rafael Nadal and Bianca Andreescu’s triumphs in New York.

Rafael Nadal was our 7/2 Outright Tip for the men’s 2019 US Open this year, and the Spaniard defeated Daniil Medvedev, our 16/1 Each-Way pick for the tournament, in an epic five-set final in New York. It was an incredible final, and Rafael Nadal proved once again why many consider him to be the greatest of all time, as he walked away with his 4th US Open title.

Meanwhile, we also backed Bianca Andreescu as our 16/1 Each-Way Pick in the women’s draw this year. The Canadian ace didn’t disappoint as she produced a stunning performance to defeat Serena Williams in straight-sets in the final. Bianca Andreescu walking away with the title meant we had successfully tipped the last two winners of the women’s grand slams, after we backed Simona Halep to win Wimbledon at 14/1 in July!

Bianca Andreescu bt. Serena Williams 6-3 7-5

Canadian ace Bianca Andreescu has been playing arguably the best tennis on the WTA Tour this season, and she was our 16/1 Each-Way Tip for the tournament.

Andreescu has barely lost a match this season, and she was coming into the tournament having not been beaten since March. The teenager took on the greatest of them all in the final, Serena Williams, and she held her nerve to win her 1st grand slam title.

After breaking Serena in the opening game of the match, Andreescu was extremely solid on serve throughout the remainder of the first set, before breaking Serena once again to take the opener 6-3. Andreescu was on a role heading into the second set, and she appeared to be easing to victory, as she took a commanding 5-1 lead over the former world number one.

However, after saving a championship point, Serena finally started playing her best tennis of the final, and she remarkably managed to pull the second set back to 5-5. The next game, however, proved to be pivotal, as Andreescu produced a massive hold to go 6-5 up, and more importantly halt Serena’s momentum. After fighting both Serena and the crowd for the whole match, Andreescu finally got over the winning line, as she broke Williams once again to take the match 6-3 7-5.

A maiden grand slam title for rising star Bianca Andreescu, while out 16/1 Each-Way Tip for the women’s 2019 US Open had landed!

Rafael Nadal bt. Daniil Medvedev 7-5 6-3 5-7 4-6 6-4

As both our 7/2 Outright Tip and our 16/1 Each-Way Tip were competing in this final, we were in a win-win situation regardless on Sunday night. In the end, Rafael Nadal’s experience and unmatched fighting spirit was enough to see him win a 19th grand slam title.

It appeared at though Rafael Nadal was going to ease to a straight-sets victory in this final, as he took the opening two sets 7-5 and 6-3, before going up a break early in the 3rd set. However, Medvedev refused to go out without a fight. The Russian ace broke back to level the set, before saving some more break points from Nadal that would’ve seen the Spaniard go 5-4 up. It would be Nadal that would eventually blink first, as Medvedev broke him to take the 3rd set 7-5. The 4th set is where the momentum completely swung in Medvedev’s favour, and he found an extra level. Despite being the pantomime villain earlier in the tournament, Medvedev amazingly won over the crowd, and he eventually broke Nadal to win the 4th set 6-4, and send this final to a deciding set.

At this point, a case could’ve been made that Medvedev was now the favourite to win the title. However, Rafael Nadal is the greatest fighter this sport has ever seen, and he proved that in the second game of the final set. While Medvedev held his serve to go 1-0 up, he then went on the attack and manufactured more break points on Nadal’s serve. To add to the drama, on the third of those break points Nadal lost his 1st serve due to a 2nd time violation of the match. This actually gave Nadal the motivation he needed, as he won three successive points for a massive hold, and that proved to be the catalyst he needed.

The momentum was firmly back with Nadal after that hold of serve, and not long after, the Spaniard secured back-to-back breaks of serve to go from 2-2 to 5-2 up. After overcoming nerves, and yet another mini fightback from Medvedev, Nadal eventually got the job done as he saved a break point before holding to win the set 6-4, and end an epic contest that had lasted just shy of 5 hours, at 4 hours and 54 minutes!

An epic between two fantastic players saw Rafael Nadal come out victorious to win his 19th grand slam title, and to land our 7/2 main tip for the men’s 2019 US Open!
