Now back in Northern Ireland he turns niche stats into predictions for FST, while he's one of the few people on this island who is equally comfortable at Windsor Park and the Aviva.

Last season didn’t have anything like a top scorer race in the Championship, it was a procession. Aleksandar Mitrovic racked up 42 goals in Fulham’s title-winning campaign. He smashed the record for most goals by a player in the division, finishing 13 clear of second placed Dominic Solanke.

We landed a winner with Mitro by backing him for top scorer at 8/1 last season. We also backed him at 6/1 in 2019/20, while we had a big each-way success in 2021 when Adam Armstrong placed among the scorers at 25/1.

The top two scorers from last season have won promotion, while Ben Brereton Diaz could also follow them out of the division given the rumoured interest in him. However, that doesn’t guarantee we’ll see a brand new name, with a previous winner returning to the second tier.

Below we have our 22/23 top scorer predictions, alongside a couple of well priced specials for the coming season.

Championship 2022/23 top goalscorer predictions

Teemu Pukki (Norwich)

Pukki won the golden boot in 2018/19 and he racked up another 26 goals the last time Norwich were at this level in 20/21, leading them to the title once again. Pukki was squeezed out in a competitive field that year, with the top four scorers from that season all plying their trade in the top flight this season bar Pukki.

The Finn has been an incredible consistent scorer over the years for Norwich. He’s hit 29 and 26 in two Championship campaigns and 11 in both Premier League seasons. It’s little surprise that he’s been installed as the favourite in this market.

Pukki also has the strongest midfield behind him in the division, with off-the-charts creativity at this level. He’s going to get chances for a side who will dominate most games, and we saw how that worked out for Mitrovic last season.

Pukki deserves his position as frontrunner for the golden boot, but there’s still value in backing him at 8/1 to top the scoring charts.

Viktor Gyokeres (Coventry)

Coventry forward Gyokeres hit 17 goals in the Championship last season, benefitting from playing in front of a very creative Coventry side. The Swede did clock in below his expected goals predicted tally of 19, meaning he has room to grow this season.

At just 24 Gyokeres has every opportunity to improve this season. This is the point when strikers tend to improve their scoring output and the Swedish forward is doing it just as Coventry peak. The Sky Blues have been quietly improving year after year and they’re ready for another jump.

Gyokere can benefit from that and he appeals at 25/1 to be crowned top scorer.

Scott Twine (Burnley)

Burnley dipped into League One to pick up Twine, paying £4million for the MK Dons man. The forward faces a big step up at Turf Moor, but that’s something he’s already managed. He scored seven goals in 25 games in League One for Swindon in 20/21, then he hit 20 in 45 games for the Dons last term.

The higher calibre of player seemed to help Twine, who is an impressive finisher. Heading to a Burnley side who are being reinvented under Vincent Kompany could see Twine step up again. He’s the best attacking option for the way the Clarets are set to play, so I can see him getting a lot of minutes and potentially racking up the goals.

He’s another 25/1 option, which I think offers a lot of value for a side who are strong enough to be in the playoff mix.

Championship 2022/23 specials predictions

Norwich to score 100+ league goals

Last season saw Fulham crack 100 goals at this level and the Canaries will see themselves being in a similar class this time around. Norwich hit 93 goals in their title-winning campaign in 18/19 and the squad has really stepped up since then.

Given the huge amount of creativity and finishing ability in this Norwich side, they should push close to 100 goals this season. Given that, you could get a lot out of backing them for 100+ goals at 25/1.

Middlesbrough & Norwich to be promoted, Coventry to finish in top 6 & Reading to be relegated

This a collection of some of our Championship outrights for the season, with Middlesbrough and Norwich both backed in our winners and promotion tips article.

We also laid out the case for Coventry in that article, while problems seem to be mounting for Reading so we’ve backed them in our Championship relegation predictions. That mix of some of our outright tips can be backed at a huge 80/1!
