FST’s Fantasy Football tips for GW15: splash out on defence

Before becoming a Sports Journalist for Free Super Tips, Aaron spent three years studying Sports Journalism at the University of Sunderland while taking in the Black Cats' 'glory years' under Martin O'Neill. Now back in Northern Ireland he turns niche stats into predictions for FST, while he's one of the few people on this island who is equally comfortable at Windsor Park and the Aviva.

It’s that time again, the annual Boxing Day Premier League fixtures. It’s a weekend picked with football, with about nine hours of wall-to-wall top-flight football each day.

However, that brings with it another fantasy football deadline, with managers rushing to get their teams in by 11am on Boxing Day.

This weekend has plenty of fancied FPL talents taking on beatable opposition, but what’s the best way to go about collecting points? Ahead of the weekend, we’ve covered everything you need to know.

Don’t forget that you can get a more in-depth look at each match this weekend in our Premier League predictions.

Fantasy Football Transfer Tips this Week

Welcome back, Robbo

This week feels as good a time as any to invest in defence. While we all abandoned our top-shelf defenders early this term, we’ve been slowly building up at the back. Now there’s a competitive balance of premium defenders and handy low-budget options.

We’re diving back in with the game’s most expensive defender – Andy Robertson (7.2m). Clashing with West Brom at home provides him with a chance to bank assists along with a clean sheet. The Reds look just as strong while dealing with injuries and their full-backs tend to deliver.

Time to topple DCL

With an ownership that’s topped 60%, Dominic Calvert-Lewin has become incredibly popular in FPL. While his recent streak of assists has been encouraging, there’s an opportunity to get a differential talent in and save some vital funds.

Chris Wood (6.2m) is certainly less of an FPL favourite. His ownership sits at just 1%, but that could change given the good run ahead. Burnley face a Leeds side who shipped 11 goals last week before home clashes with Sheffield United and Fulham. That allows Wood plenty of opportunities.

Who to Captain in GW15

COMPLIANT - Mohamed Salah for Liverpool vs Ajax in the Champions League

Mo Salah

Let’s not overcomplicate things, Mo Salah is the best choice in a good weekend for captaincy picks. Jack Grealish against Crystal Palace is an outsider, while many will go with Kevin De Bruyne against Newcastle.

However, Salah just ran riot in 30 minutes at Palace after being rested, so his return for the West Brom home game should bring points. Salah has always tended to save his biggest displays for Anfield. Judging from the Baggies’ 3-0 loss to Villa, Big Sam doesn’t have much hope of stopping Salah this weekend.
