The glitz and glamour of the Champions League returns this week after a five-month hiatus, and supporters are gearing up to consume a mouth-watering fixture programme over the coming days.

Football’s most prestigious club competition resumes at the Last 16 stage on Thursday and Friday before the victors descend on Portugal to contest the tournament’s climactic rounds in an international style knockout format next week.

Some of Europe’s biggest names must come through Last 16 second leg tussles to make it to UEFA’s festival of football however, and that should ensure that this week’s deciding fixtures are captivating contests.

On Friday, Manchester City host Real Madrid at the Etihad Stadium in a clash between two of the favourites to lift the Champions League, while Juventus meet Lyon in Turn at the same time.

A day later, Barcelona entertain a dangerous looking Napoli team at the Camp Nou, while Bayern Munich are odds on to complete their two-legged demolition job on Frank Lampard’s Chelsea.

Cristiano Ronaldo to have 5+ shots on target vs Lyon

Remarkably, Ronaldo hit five or more efforts on goal in 24 separate appearances already this season, and the ex-Real Madrid and Man Utd start managed to clock 10 or more attempts on goal on four different occasions during the same period.

Ronaldo will be desperate to fire Juventus to glory against Lyon this week, and we should expect to see the attacker let fly at every given opportunity.

Barcelona to win both halves vs Napoli

Barcelona might not be the all-conquering European super power they once were, however, the Blaugrana’s record at the Camp Nou this season shows that they are still one of the continent’s toughest teams to topple on their own patch.

With 19 victories, three draws and just two defeats from 24 fixtures in Catalonia, Barcelona have shown they are experts at harnessing home advantage, and though they will be playing in front of empty stands against Napoli this week, we expect Los Cules to fill their boots.

Already beaten 12 times this season, the Partenopei have often looked vulnerable this term, and a Barcelona side, that won both halves in over double figure fixtures this season, can take advantage.

Both teams to score in the first half of Bayern Munich vs Chelsea

Bayern Munich have been playing some sensational football on their way to winning 21 out of 22 competitive fixtures in 2020, and having notched 31 goals in their 10 home matches at the Allianz Arena during the same period, the Bavarians look good to record another comfortable win against Chelsea.

Interestingly, Bayern scored 16 of those 31 goals before the half time interval, and Hansi Flick’s free-scoring Bundesliga champions should have little trouble cutting through the Blues’ defensive ranks to score before the first half whistle is blown this week.

With 12 first half goals since the restart themselves, Chelsea have shown an aptitude for opening teams up in the opening 45 minute period of games too however, and the Blues, who only failed to score in one of their last 15 fixtures overall, have the tools to breach their host’s backline in Munich in the early throes of the skirmish on Saturday.
