Porto wrestled the Primeira Liga title back last season, despite a spirited push from the other two members of Portugal’s Big Three.
Sporting matched the 82-point tally which had taken them to the title 12 months prior, while also reaching the last eight of the Champions League. Benfica finished in third place, despite an unbeaten league campaign.
Former Fulham boss Marco Silva has replaced Jose Mourinho at Benfica, while Sporting have overhauled their midfield as they bid to return to the summit.

Sporting’s run in Europe was huge for the club, but it is hard to ignore the impact it had on their title chances.
A three-game stretch in mid to late April saw Sporting drop seven crucial points thanks to conceding three added-time goals and two penalties.
Those three matches came in the immediate aftermath of their Champions League exit against Arsenal. That run saw them slip out of the top two, only for Benfica to drop four points in their final three matches.
It was a mixed return for Rui Borges in his first full season in charge. However, he now has to deal with enormous turnover in their squad.
Sporting had already agreed to sell Geovany Quenda to Chelsea more than a year ago, while Francisco Trincao has moved to Saudi side Al-Ahli. Morten Hjulmand’s departure to Atletico Madrid is their biggest loss, while Ousmane Diomande is also expected to leave.
Champions Porto have had a quiet window, and the club has limited spending power. The Dragons are also entering uncharted territory with manager Francesco Farioli, who has not tended to hang around very long at his previous clubs.
He left after a single season at Nice and Ajax, overachieving with both clubs. He also moved on quickly in two spells in Turkey. The 37-year-old has a bright future in management, but retaining the title in a league that is usually decided by fine margins could be beyond him.
Farioli is also juggling the demands of Champions League football with a league campaign for the first time, and that might stretch Porto quite thin.
Benfica’s appointment of Silva could end up being decisive. While he has spent the previous four seasons in midtable with Fulham, he has previous experience in title races.
Silva won the Portuguese second tier with Estoril in 2012, and he took Fulham out of the Championship as champions in 2022.
Before making his name in English football, Silva won the Greek title with Olympiacos in 2016, with his side winning 28 of their 30 matches.
He will need to find that kind of consistency to lead Benfica back to the top.
The Eagles have a defence that Silva can improve, a budding star in Andreas Schjelderup, 22, while adding former Aston Villa striker Jhon Duran could prove to be a real coup.
