Serie A may have an incredible fight for Italy’s final Champions League spots, but there’s also drama in the relegation fight. While it started slow, recent weeks have brought a huge twist at the bottom. The last spot in the drop zone remains open, with three sides in the mix. Of those three, Italian giants Fiorentina could yet fall into the bottom three. Could this race for survival finish with a huge side dropping into the second tier?
It’s all set up for a dramatic final day, especially given that two of the three teams face each other. Ahead of Sunday’s huge games at the bottom of Serie A, we’re looking at the relegation fight in detail, including the latest relegation betting odds for the big finale.
The Relegation Battle so Far
Bologna have Sinisa Mihajlovic to thank for their position, with six straight home wins helping them into the safety of midtable. Monday’s 3-3 draw with Lazio leaves them out of reach. Udinese remain just three points clear of 18th going into this clash, but their superior head to head record against the rest keeps them safe. While it’s been a poor campaign at the Dacia Arena, the Zebrette will still feature in Serie A next season.
That means it comes down to Genoa, Empoli and Fiorentina. A draw last weekend left Genoa third bottom, with their 2019 form seeing them sleepwalk into danger. Empoli were able to thrash Torino 4-1, boosting their goal difference and pushing them out of the bottom three. That leaves Fiorentina, who host Genoa on Sunday. Their terrible run in 2019 has left them in massive danger, with an awful losing streak behind them. While they’re considered outsiders, la Viola are only three points clear of the drop.
Final Day Showdowns
Inter Milan vs Empoli
While hosts Inter Milan are in the fight for the Champions League spots, this clash is also huge at the bottom. Empoli have been thrilling in their first season back at this level, but can they survive the drop? Heading to San Siro is certainly a daunting task for the Azzurri. There’s little room for error for the visitors, who sit just a point clear of the drop going into this one. While there’s pressure, we expect entertainment too in our Inter Milan vs Empoli Predictions.
While Empoli need a result, we still see them chasing the game in this clash. They’ve been incredibly attacking so far in Serie A, which has obviously cost them in their clashes with the top sides. They’ve had trouble on the road getting results with that mentality, but they did finally win on their travels in their last away game. A 2-1 success at Sampdoria shows that the Azzurri can pull off a result on their travels, but they’re going to need something much bigger to guarantee safety themselves. Of course, they could always stay up by default, but they’d need a huge favour from Fiorentina.
Fiorentina vs Genoa
The hosts do need a lot to go against them to be relegated. They have to lose to Genoa while Empoli need to win at Inter Milan. However, we have seen huge twists on the final day before. The hosts can make everything simple with a win over Genoa, that would put the Grifone out of the running and send them down to Serie B. That would save themselves and Empoli in the process, but obviously, that’s not as easy as it sounds. Fiorentina enter this clash on a five-game losing run, so they are obviously worried about top-flight survival. We don’t see them getting a result on Sunday in our Fiorentina vs Genoa Predictions.
Who Will Survive?
The Azzurri are likely to come up short. While Inter have their own issues, we expect them to get over the line in the Champions League race. A point for Genoa along with a defeat for Empoli would put the Azzurri in the bottom three on head to head record. It’s a narrow margin, but we think it’ll send them into Serie B.
