Born in the south east of Ireland, Simon put his life-long love of football to good use when he started a successful independent blog in 2010. That opened up an alternative route to a career in journalism, and having had work published across a number of sites and publications, Simon joined the staff at Spotlight Sports Group in 2018.

Southampton host Manchester United at St. Mary’s Stadium in the Premier League’s early kick-off on Saturday, in an intriguing clash between two clubs searching for consistency.

Having lost their opening two matches of the 2019/20 season, Southampton’s form hit a more positive curve in recent weeks, and on Saturday, Ralph Hasenhüttl will attempt to mastermind the Saints’ third win on the spin in all competitions.

Their opponents this weekend, Manchester United, continue to frustrate however. Already, their season-opening 4-0 dismemberment of Chelsea feels like a lifetime ago, and United’s 1-2 reverse at home to Crystal Palace last week shone a bright and unflattering light on the problems in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad.

Saturday’s game on the south coast between the Saints and United has an incredibly open look to it, and that in turn opens up a huge range of betting options, markets and possibilities to consider.

At bet365, you can make the most of that wide range of options by customising and creating a unique bet for the game by using their Bet Builder.

What is bet365’s Bet Builder?

Bet Builder allows you create the bet YOU want on any football match. You can choose from a list of the most popular markets and once you have added them to your bet, you can calculate the odds from your customised selection.

For example, you could combine first goalscorer, both teams to score, the total number of corners and the full-time result to create one single bet with the price for your multi-part selection.

You can add up to 6 separate markets to your Bet Builder selection, and your odds will update automatically each time you add a new selection.

Once you are finished and happy with your selections, select the price displayed on the Bet Builder slip and your unique bet will be added to your bet slip.

We’ve picked out a range of selections from Southampton’s skirmish with Manchester United at Saturday lunchtime, that we think are well worth considering for your Bet Builder this week. Check them out below.

Southampton vs Manchester United Bet Builder Tips

Southampton Double Chance

The ramifications from Manchester United’s shock 2-1 defeat at home to Crystal Palace last weekend were layered thick, leaving Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with numerous problems to contend with ahead of Utd’s trip to Southampton.

The morale-shattering result was compounded by injuries to Luke Shaw and Anthony Martial, and United’s paper-thin squad already looks stretched to the limit just three games into the new season.

After two wins inside the space of three days against Brighton and Fulham in the Premier League and Carabao Cup respectively, a rejuvenated Southampton will be ready to take advantage of any weakness or hesitancy in the United ranks.

The Saints took points off their more illustrious antagonists in two of their last three meetings with United at St. Mary’s, and Southampton’s encouraging display at the same venue against Liverpool earlier this month should add to their belief that they can make life tough for United again on Saturday.

Both teams to score

Both Southampton and Manchester United have showed a propensity for leaking goals over a sustained period in the Premier League, and we’re expecting both defences to conceded again this weekend.

Southampton kept only three clean sheets in their last 20 Premier League fixtures overall, though they did manage to register themselves in an impressive seventeen of those games.

Both teams hit the net in a league-high 68% of Man Utd’s top-flight fixtures last term, and goals went in at either end in two of United’s first three Premier League matches in 2019/20.

In addition, Southampton and United shared nine goals between them last season in two league encounters that finished 2-2 at St. Mary’s and 3-2 to the hosts at Old Trafford.

Over 3 cards in the match for both teams combined

So far in 2019/20, Manchester United’s tackling has been fast, loose and quite often mistimed – in fact, after three rounds of Premier League fixtures, United are statistically the joint most ill-disciplined team alongside Crystal Palace.

Both clubs have amassed seven yellow cards each, while Southampton sit just slightly behind them with 5 bookings in total.

Last season’s clashes between Southampton and United were played firmly on the edge with challenges and blows liberally exchanged.

A whopping 10 players were booked across the 180 minutes of fraught action, with eight of those yellows brandished during Southampton and United’s last battle at St. Mary’s.

The statistics suggest that we should expect our targeted card total to be passed with relative comfort this weekend.

Pierre Hojbjerg to be booked

With more than a couple of total booking expected at St. Mary’s on Saturday, Saints midfielder Pierre Hojbjerg is among the prime candidates to be carded.

The Danish international was shown yellow on seven separate occasions in the Premier League last season and five of those seven cautions were picked up in Southampton’s home games.

The 24-year old was among the eight players booked in the Saints’ last heated tussle with United at St. Mary’s last December, and the combative schemer was cautioned in Southampton’s most recent Premier League outing against Brighton.

Over 9 corners in the match for both teams combined

The corner count in Southampton’s Premier League fixtures has been remarkably high so far this season, with an average of 12 awarded per Saints game for both teams combined since the new campaign kicked-off.

That particular set-piece statistic won’t surprise Southampton fans however – the Saints’ matches ranked 6th in the Premier League for average corners awarded per game (10.17) in 2018/19.

Man Utd’s equivalent figure for the current season stands at a more modest 9 corners per Premier League game on average, though their brace of meetings with Southampton last term produced an average of 12 corners kicks for both sides in total.
