World Cup 2026 is nearly upon us and among the plethora of outright options the top goalscorer market is one of the most popular.
I’ve picked out three contenders to take the Golden Boot award ahead of this summer’s showpiece, with a best bet and two each-way picks at bigger prices covering the top four places.

Kylian Mbappe (France) @ 11/2
Kylian Mbappe finished as the top goalscorer at the last World Cup in Qatar so he will make history if he repeats that feat in North American.
No player has ever won the Golden Boot twice, but the stars may have aligned for Mbappe to cement his status as an all-time great.
When picking out top scorer contenders there are a few things to consider. The quality and record of the player is the obvious starting point, with how deep their nation could go in the competition and the standard of opposition they will face in the group stages also crucial.
Mbappe finished last season as the top scorer in La Liga with 25 goals and he scored five goals in four games during qualifying, so his own talents can’t be questioned. France are among the tournament favourites and are likely to reach the latter stages.
Les Bleus they will face Iraq, Senegal and Norway in the group stages and on balance they have been given a fairly kind draw, so Mbappe ticks all the boxes and looks a justifiable favourite for Golden Boot honours.
England’s Harry Kane is next in the betting and he also has a chance to become the first ever two-time Golden Boot winner. The Three Lions have a tougher group draw with Croatia, Ghana and a defensively-minded Panama side joining them in Group L, so Mbappe looks a better pick than the Bayern Munich man.

Lamine Yamal (Spain) @ 18/1
Lamine Yamal missed the end of the season with Barcelona through injury but should be available for Spain’s World Cup opener.
Yamal isn’t necessarily an out-and-out goalscorer and is more of an all-round forward, but he still weighed in with 16 goals in 28 games for Barcelona in La Liga.
Spain are the current favourites and seem set for a deep run at the World Cup. La Roja also have a kind draw with Cape Verde and Saudi Arabia joining them in Group H. Uruguay should provide a sterner test but they face the South American nation in the final round of group games when both teams may well have already qualified, that could lead to a more open and higher-scoring game than normally would be expected between those teams.
In any case, Yamal looks to have a chance to grab a few goals in the group stages and at 16/1 he looks a decent value pick for top scorer honours.

Julian Alvarez (Argentina) @ 25/1
Lionel Messi remains Argentina’s talisman but the veteran now needs a bit more support from his team-mates and Julian Alvarez could help ease the scoring pressure on the Inter Miami attacker.
Alvarez has developed a reputation as a striker who raises his levels in cup competitions having scored 22 goals in 32 Champions League games for current club Atletico Madrid and Manchester City across the last three seasons.
The defending champions will face Algeria, Jordan and Austria in the group stages and Alvarez should play a key role. There is a reasonable chance that Messi will have his minutes managed in the opening phase ahead of tougher tests further down the line, so Alvarez may well be the main man in Argentina’s attack during those fixtures and as a 25/1 shot he looks excellent value as an each-way contender for Golden Boot honours.
