Goals set to flow in Amsterdam

Having been involved in Conference League qualifying, Ajax are already five games into their season and they started their Eredivisie campaign with a 2-0 win at Zwolle.

After finishing only fifth in the Dutch top-flight last season, better will be expected of Ajax and they appointed Spanish tactician Michel as manager in June in a bid to change their fortunes.

Ajax had 26 shots in that opening win over Zwolle but were helped by playing against ten men for over half an hour and their Conference League campaign has been littered with goals.

Michel’s men recorded a pair of 4-1 wins over Serbian side Vojvodina in the second qualifying round while they saw off League of Ireland outfit Shelbourne 5-3 on aggregate, winning 3-1 at home before a 2-2 draw in Dublin.

It suggests there may still be a few teething problems despite their ability to create plenty of chances and Heerenveen can play their part in an entertaining encounter.

The visitors will be on a high after opening their season with a 1-0 win at home to FC Twente and 12 of their final 15 games in the Eredivisie last term went over 2.5 goals.

Ajax still have a bit to prove after last season’s poor showing and their 17 home league games featured 49 goals, so this should be a high-octane affair.

Ajax have won seven of their last eight meetings at home to Heerenveen, scoring at least three times in six of those fixtures, and still look the most likely victors. A 3-1 win appeals most as a correct-score selection.
