Amiens vs Guingamp Predictions
This is one of the most important fixtures of match day 38, as Amiens face one of their biggest clashes since the final day of the Ligue 2 2016/17 season. The Unicorns currently sit on 35 points in 17th and a win would guarantee their safety but a draw or a loss might not be enough to keep them up if Caen get a positive result, meaning that Amiens would have to face either Troyes or Lens in a play-off.
Amiens face the best possible opponent for this match as they are chasing a win but they haven’t got a victory since early March, so will really need to up their game if they are to get the three points. They haven’t won any of their last nine matches but only two of these ended in defeat as they have been very hard to break down, with an impressive five clean sheets in this time. They were powerless to resist the onslaught of Monaco last week though as les Monegasques beat them 2-0 at the Stade Louis II. A win here would have been massive for Amiens but they need to dust themselves off and prepare for this match. They have only scored in four of their last nine matches though so Guingamp may be in with a chance here.
Essentially this match means nothing to Guingamp. They have already been relegated and they will probably be eager just to see the back of this campaign, as their dip between last year’s 12th place finish and now has been astonishing. Sometimes when teams get relegated they then play a bit better, without the pressure that was once there and that was very much on show against Nîmes, or at least for the first half. Alexandre Mendy and Lyon target Marcus Thuram put Guingamp 2-0 up before half-time but a capitulation in the second 45 saw them eventually draw 2-2.
This result was rather typical of Guingamp’s season and with just one clean sheet in their last eight matches, Amiens are in with a great chance of winning. Guingamp have scored eight goals in their last seven games though, which is rather good form for a team in their position. However, Guingamp have the worst away record in the league, winning just two of their trips this season.
Amiens have a much better record at home, as this is where they have picked up 23 of their 35 points. Amiens are also unbeaten in their last seven games at the Stade de la Licorne which, for us, tips this match in their favour. The motivation of a place in next year’s Ligue 1 should be enough to get Amiens going and following another disheartening result last week, we don’t see Guingamp getting a result. Amiens have kept five clean sheets in their last seven home games and with Guingamp failing to score in four of their last six away trips, we’re backing a 1-0 win for the Unicorns.
