Argentina -1

Reason for tip

Argentina have won 13 of their last 14 matches and given the world champions have won nine of those games by two clear goals, it could be a curtain-raiser to forget for the Canucks. Canada have recently been thrashed by Japan and the Netherlands and a 3-2 loss to Jamaica suggests they may not even get close to La Albiceleste.

Argentina 2-0

Reason for tip

Lionel Messi and co will be keen to get this tournament opener wrapped up as soon as possible and it would be no surprise to see them build up a two-goal lead and then take their foot off the gas. Lionel Scaloni could substitute his key men early on with tougher games against Chile and Peru up next, so expect a comfortable victory for Argentina but not a complete rout.

Argentina vs Canada Predictions

  • Argentina have won 13 of their 14 games since beating France in the 2022 World Cup final
  • Nine of those 13 victories have been by two clear goals
  • Canada have won just three of their last 11 games

Champions can cruise to victory

The 2024 Copa America gets underway on Friday when favourites and title holders Argentina take on Canada in Atlanta, and things should be pretty straightforward for Lionel Scaloni’s world champions.

La Albiceleste have won 13 of their 14 games since beating France on penalties in Qatar 18 months ago and 11 of those wins have come to nil, with Scaloni’s men racking up an aggregate score of 31-4 in that run.

A 1-0 win over bitter rivals Brazil is the standout result in their impressive run and Canada simply do not have the form or players to compete with such a dominant side.

Canucks could struggle to trouble Argentina

Les Rouges crashed out at the group stage in Qatar, losing all three of their matches, and have failed to find consistency since.

Back-to-back draws with minnows Guadalupe and Guatemala – who Argentina beat 4-1 recently – last summer highlight their shortcomings and recent losses have only demonstrated their flaws further.

Canada have lost 4-1 to Japan, 3-2 to Jamaica and 4-0 to the Netherlands within their last six games, suggesting they will be second-best against Argentina on Friday as they go down by at least two goals in Atlanta.

Nine of La Albiceleste’s last 13 wins have come by two clear goals and with Lionel Messi still performing at a high level and the likes of Lautaro Martinez and Alexis Mac Allister coming off the back of successful individual seasons, things could get ugly for the Canucks.
