Argentina to Win

Reason for tip

Argentina may have suffered a shock on Tuesday but they have won 13 of their last 17 games and have beaten Mexico six times in their last seven meetings, while the underdogs have only won two of their last seven games.

Lionel Messi To Score Anytime

Reason for tip

Lionel Messi has scored 11 goals in his last five appearances for Argentina and had another ruled out for a tight offside on Tuesday. He has scored four goals in his last five appearances for PSG and looks in excellent form.

Argentina vs Mexico Predictions

  • Argentina have won 13 of their last 17 games
  • Mexico have lost six of their last seven meetings with Argentina, conceding 20 goals and scoring just four
  • Lionel Messi has scored 11 goals in his last five appearances for Argentina

La Albiceleste suffer shock defeat

Argentina suffered one of the greatest shocks in World Cup history on Tuesday as they were stunned by a bold Saudi Arabia team, falling victim to ten frantic second-half minutes to lose 2-1 after having three goals ruled out in the first-half.

Despite this, they have all the quality necessary to get back on track on Saturday and I expect them to hit back with a win against an aging Mexico side.

Prior to their surprise loss, Argentina were unbeaten in 36 games and had won 13 of their 16 games since their Copa America triumph last year, scoring 37 times and conceding just three.

El Tri struggle for form

Mexico’s opener was rather less eventful, with El Tri playing out a goalless draw with Poland and surviving a late scare when Robert Lewandowski had his penalty saved.

The underdogs have now won just two of their last seven games and have lost six and drawn one of their last seven meetings with Argentina, racking up an aggregate loss of 20-4.

Favourites to hit back on Saturday

With Group C wide open following Tuesday’s results, Argentina will be looking to bite back in Lusail and they should be well positioned to get the three points, with Lionel Messi a standout option in the anytime goalscorer market.

He scored La Albiceleste’s only goal of the game on Tuesday and now has 11 goals in his last five appearances for his country. He arrived in Qatar having scored four goals in his last five appearances for PSG and could make the difference again here.

Mexico have lost to nil in their last three meetings with Argentina and conceded an average of 2.67 goals per game in this period. Four of Argentina’s last eight outings have ended in 3-0 wins, so that’s a solid correct score punt.
