Premier League leaders face basement boys on Friday night
There is a top against bottom clash in the Premier League on Friday night as Arsenal welcome Southampton to the Emirates Stadium.
The Gunners have squandered 2-0 leads in back-to-back games after consecutive 2-2 draws with Liverpool and West Ham, meaning they now have a four point lead over Manchester City. Technically, the title race is in both team’s hands as City have a game in hand and the top two still have to play each other.
Southampton have just two points to show from their last six games but are only four points adrift of safety as all the teams currently in the bottom five are struggling for form.
Arsenal defence looks vulnerable
Anything other than an Arsenal win here would clearly register as a huge shock and that is reflected in the odds, with Mikel Arteta’s men just 1/5 to come out on top.
For a better price, a home win and both teams to score looks a reasonable selection despite the fact Saints have failed to score in four of their last six outings. As mentioned earlier, Arsenal have blown leads in their last two games and have now gone five fixtures without a clean sheet. Southampton scored in a recent defeat to Manchester City, hit three goals in a thrilling draw with Spurs and held Manchester United to a 0-0 draw so they tend to step up against the better sides – so they may be able to at least get on the scoresheet at the Emirates.
Jesus the danger man for Arsenal
Gabriel Jesus is making up for lost time after a stint on the sidelines as the Arsenal forward has scored in three successive games, hitting four goals in total. The Brazilian will also be on spot kick duties so he is the clear stabndout pick in the anytime goalscorer market.
A 4-1 win for the hosts looks a reasonable correct score prediction as Arsenal have been in devastating attacking form at their North London home. The Gunners have scored exactly four goals in three of their last four home league assignments – two of which were 4-1 wins – and they scored three in the other, a 3-2 win over Bournemouth.
