Atletico Madrid vs Celta Vigo Predictions
These two sides were both losing Semi-Finalists in the Copa del Rey in midweek so they’ll both be feeling a little bit deflated you’d imagine. Celta in particular would’ve been gutted to lose to Alaves having knocked out Real Madrid in the previous round and it’s a big ask for them to come here just 3 days later and get a result. Atleti are still struggling for goals to some extent though and this could be a low scoring game.
Matches at the Vicente Calderon of late have tended to go that way, following on from some more encouraging attacking displays earlier in the season. Their last 4 home league games have all been against sides in mid-table or lower but have produced just 4 goals in total, all scored by Atleti. 6 of their last 8 matches in La Liga have produced under 2.5 goals and 62% of their league games this term have also delivered under 2.5 goals. Defensively they are still pretty solid with a clean sheet ratio of 57% overall and 60% at home in the league.
That is a measure of the task Celta Vigo are faced with here in trying to break them down. They’ve played some good attacking football at times this season but in recent weeks they’ve looked a little short on ideas. They failed to score in 180 minutes against Alaves in the Copa del Rey, sinking to an agonising 1-0 aggregate defeat. 4 of their last 5 games in all competitions have produced under 2.5 goals and they have failed to score in 40% of their away league games, so it’s not like they are impossible to defend against, and an Atleti side that are very strong at the back should be able to cope pretty well.
Tiredness could also be a factor for Celta Vigo and to an extent Atletico Madrid here. Their success in the cup means they’ve played midweek matches in all of the last six weeks whilst trying to maintain a league challenge. That is bound to catch up on any team and we could see this game played at a fairly slow tempo as a result.
Therefore, this is unlikely to develop into a goal-fest and backing Under 2.5 Goals at Evens looks to offer value.
