Atletico Mineiro vs Sao Paulo Predictions

      • Atletico Mineiro have won four of their last five games, going without defeat in seven.
      • Sao Paulo have only won one away league game this season – at lowly Atletico Goianiense last time out.
      • Atletico Mineiro have won each of their last four home league games against Sao Paulo – a run which stretches back to 2017.

      Champions back in the groove

Atletico Mineiro’s bid for successive Brazilian titles was hit by a four-match run without victory last month, though their only defeat in that time came in a 5-3 thriller against Fluminense, but Antonio Mohamed’s men have gone back to within two points of the summit with a three-game winning run in the league, and can continue their revival against Sao Paulo.

Mohamed’s men have won four of their last five games in all competitions, going unbeaten through their last seven including an impressive win over Flamengo and a Copa Libertadores triumph against CS Emelec. Their terrific record at the Mineirao is another reason to back them; the champions have won five of their eight home league games, only losing one and scoring more goals on their own turf (15) than all bar Palmeiras in Serie A (16).

Sao Paulo claimed back-to-back wins when beating lowly Atletico Goianiense last time out, but that represented their first away league win in eight attempts in 2022, as well as just their second Serie A victory since beating Cuiaba in early May (10 games ago). Rogerio Ceni’s team may improve on last year’s disappointing mid-table finish by virtue of their solidity – they’ve only lost three league games, drawing seven, but they look ill-equipped to compete with the country’s best.

Back hosts to remain in touch with summit

Sao Paulo have lost on each of their last four league trips to the Mineirao, and that record looks unlikely to improve when they face in-form Atletico on Sunday.

We’re backing the hosts to keep up their title chase with a win, although the visitors may net in a 2-1 reverse after seeing six of their last nine games feature goals at both ends.
