Barnsley vs Newcastle Predictions
Newcastle come to Oakwell as clear favourites for the win. Since losing their opening 2 games of the campaign, they’ve won 10 out of 12, losing just the once. The ability to win on the road is key if you want to get out of this league and the Magpies have been doing that of late and have taken 13 points from their last 5 away fixtures in the league. Their overall average of 2.17 points per away game is the best record in the Championship and with Barnsley not in great form, they’ll be confident of chalking up another win here.
The Yorkshire side have just fallen back slightly after an encouraging start to the season. They’ve stuck to their attacking principles which suggests this could be an open contest with Newcastle certain to be targeting 3 points. However, the results just haven’t been coming Barnsley’s way of late. Since a stunning 4-0 win at Wolves, they’ve collected just 1 point from 5 matches and even that came via an injury time goal against Aston Villa.
Defensively Barnsley have looked very vulnerable and have kept clean sheets in only 25% of their Championship games and they’ve let in 2 or more goals in 4 of their last 5 fixtures. Only at the weekend they let in 4 at home against a Fulham side that doesn’t boast a particularly potent attack, so you have to wonder what Newcastle could do to them if they are at their best here. They average 2.08 goals per game in the league this term, the best record in the Championship. Dwight Gayle in particular is in red hot form right now with 5 goals in his last 3 matches and backing Gayle to score at any time at 13/10 looks a good shout here with his pace certain to cause Barnsley’s defence problems.
However, at the other end Barnsley could get some joy too. Newcastle have let in 5 goals in their last 4 matches and Barnsley have only failed to score once this season. Therefore, backing Both Teams to Score at 5/6 looks a solid punt here.
