Dortmund to start the campaign in style

Borussia Dortmund were once again forced to play second fiddle to Bayern Munich last season, but they should once again be the Bavarians’ main challengers as they prepare to face Hamburg on Saturday.

Niko Kovac’s team may have finished 16 points behind Harry Kane and co, but they were eight clear of RB Leipzig in third and they finished a whopping 35 points better off than Hamburg last season.

While the departure of Karim Adeyemi to Barcelona was a blow, Dortmund have boosted their midfield with the arrivals of Konstantinos Karetsas, Giannis Konstantelias and Joey Veerman.

They are unbeaten in seven against Hamburg and should have far too much quality for a team that only managed three away wins last year in the German top flight.

Hamburg started the season with a 3-0 win over Verl in the DFB-Pokal, but friendly defeats to Everton and SK Rapid suggest they are going to struggle to compete with a team of Dortmund’s quality.

Merlin Polzin’s team should be able to get on the scoresheet, though, with Dortmund conceding in eight of their last ten, while they have only kept four clean sheets in their last ten home fixtures.
