Borussia Dortmund vs Porto Predictions
It’s not often that Borussia Dortmund make an appearance in the Europa League, but their horrific first half of the season last term relegated them to Europe’s second tier continental competitions.
Their excellent end to the season and even better start to this season made them hot favourites to lift the Europa League this season, but they did struggle at times in the group stages.
Losses to Krasnodar and PAOK in the group stages saw them surprisingly finish 2nd in their group, with Krasnodar taking the top spot after an impressive showing.
However, there is no doubting Borussia Dortmund’s potential. They have scored a ridiculous amount of goals this season, with Aubemayang, Mkhitaryan, and Reus scoring a combined total of 55 goals in the Europa League and Bundesliga.
Borussia Dortmund come into this match having not lost any of their last five competitive matches and still in with a faint hope of beating Bayern Munich to the Bundesliga title, although an eight point gap between them and the leaders seems like a tall mountain to climb.
Porto themselves find themselves down in 3rd place in the Portuguese Primeira Liga, with Benfica and Sporting CP both leading them in the race for the title.
This is down to some rather surprising defeats since the beginning of 2016. They have lost six of their last 13 matches in all competitions against some massively inferior opposition in the top heavy Portuguese top flight.
They lost out on the Champions League knockout stages at the final hurdle as well, with a 2-0 defeat to Chelsea in the final group game seeing them relegated to 3rd position in their group despite the Premier League Champions’ terrible form.
Each of Porto’s last four matches have seen three or more goals scored in them, and with Dortmund on home turf I can see them gunning for a big win to finish the tie in the first leg on Thursday. Odds of 4/5 for Over 2.5 Match Goals look good value to me too, and I’m predicting a 3-1 Borussia Dortmund win at 11/1 as well.
