Barnsley Double Chance (Win or Draw) @ 7/10

We use stars to rate our confidence in our tips, with 3 being most confident to 1 being the least.
Draw 2-2 @ 11/1

Reason For Bristol City vs Barnsley Predictions

  • Bristol City have won 2 of their last 9 matches.
  • Barnsley have lost once in their last 8 in all competitions.
  • Only 6 teams have more points than the Tykes in the last 8 games.
  • 4 of the last 6 meetings between these two have finished 2-2.

Wobbling Robins

Bristol City’s tough season got worse in midweek, as they lost 1-0 away to midtable League One side Shrewsbury. That FA Cup defeat saw the Robins miss out on a clash with Liverpool, which might actually be a blessing. The hosts are in such poor form that a meeting with Liverpool could go very wrong, even with significant changes from Jurgen Klopp. Even this weekend’s meeting with 22nd placed Barnsley looks like a challenge for the hosts.

Reversal of Fortunes

When these two sides met in November, Bristol City were in the playoffs, while Barnsley were bottom. There’s still a massive gap between the pair, but fortunes have changed for both. The Robins have slipped to ninth, following two wins in their last nine matches. In the league, they’ve lost five of their last seven so fall out of the playoff spots.

Meanwhile, Barnsley are a side transformed under Gerhard Struber, losing just one of their last eight. He’s not just improved the results, but he’s transformed some of the players. Since Gerhard Struber’s first league game in charge on November 23rd, Barnsley’s Jacob Brown has registered eight assists, more than any other Championship player. Meanwhile, forward Conor Chaplin has been directly involved in more league goals this season than in any other during his career (13 – 9 goals, 4 assists); no Championship player has scored more times since the start of December than Chaplin (six).

Confident Tykes

Bristol City have lost three of their last four home league games (W1), with their 0-4 reverse against Brentford their heaviest home league defeat since February 2016 (0-4 vs Brighton). That’s left the hosts coming into this clash on the back of a major setback, while they’ve won just twice in seven home outings in all competitions.

Barnsley come into this one playing good football, lifting themselves up the table. While Bristol City’s only two wins in seven have come against the bottom two, they meet the third bottom side with the Tykes flying up the form table. Only six sides have more points across the last eight games, while only four teams have fewer points than the Robins in that same period. That has us going with Barnsley Double Chance here.

These two sides have drawn four of their last six encounters 2-2, while the visitors have scored 11 times in their last six visits to Ashton Gate. With the hosts winning only five of their 13 games, we see Barnsley adding to their solid form. These two have seen plenty of draws this term – eight and nine respectively – so we’re backing a third 2-2 draw of the season at Ashton Gate.
