Cambridge United vs Salford City Predictions

      • Cambridge have won one of their last nine league matches.
      • Cambridge have scored once in their last four league matches.
      • Salford City have scored in 71% of their away matches.

      A difficult few weeks

After an excellent start to the season, fans of Cambridge United will have been delighted with their progress and will have been dreaming of a challenge for the promotion places come the end of the campaign. However, the festive period was not kind to the U’s and things have not exactly got much better since as Cambridge have managed just a single win in their last nine league matches.

It is not as if they have been able to claim draws in that time either as they have lost six of their last eight outings and, perhaps unsurprisingly, they have started to plummet down the table. It is easy to identify their issues too, as they frequently struggle to find the back of the net and this is demonstrated perfectly by the fact that they scored just once in their last four league matches.

      Solid but unspectacular

For a club who have a relatively small fanbase and who have come through the leagues in order to get in the National League, there is more pressure on Salford City to be successful than there might be other clubs in a similar situation. Of course, the reason for that is because of their high profile owners, but it would be interesting to see if the reasonable first season in the Football League has matched their expectations.

On the pitch Salford have put themselves in a solid mid-table position, and whilst a shot at the play-offs is not out of the question, it would take a significant improvement on what we have seen so far. Speaking of improvements, the Ammies have managed to turn things around of late as they put a stop to three defeats in a row with a win and a draw in their last two matches.

      The hosts are sinking quickly

As already discussed, Cambridge have lost six of their last eight matches and as a result, they sit at the foot of the form table. They frequently fail to find the back of the net and with 18 goals conceded over the same eight match period, it is not as if they are even particularly hard to score against. Meanwhile, their visitors have found a bit of form recently and given that they have scored in 71% of their away matches, they will be confident of earning the three points. However, they have lost as many as they have won on the road this term so caution is required, and with this in mind we are backing Salford to win but adding the “Draw – No Bet” clause.

In terms of a correct score tip, we think that there could be goals at both ends of the pitch in this one. The hosts concede regularly and have conceded 18 times in their last eight matches in the league. They may struggle to score themselves, but with Salford only managing a clean sheet in 7% of their away matches this season and conceding an average of 1.5 goals per game, backing a 2-1 away win is where our money is going.
