Tip Reasoning

  • Crystal Palace lost to nil 11 times in the Premier League last season.
  • Chelsea have conceded just 17 goals in 31 competitive games since Thomas Tuchel was appointed.
  • Crystal Palace lost six of their final eight league games last season.

Tuchel’s reign continues to pay dividends

Chelsea lifted their second trophy of the Thomas Tuchel era on Wednesday as the Champions League winners beat Villarreal on penalties in the UEFA Super Cup and there are high hopes for the Blues heading into the new domestic campaign.

The hosts did lose two of their final three Premier League games but with a Champions League final to prepare for you can forgive that, especially since those were two of just three league defeats suffered in Tuchel’s 19 matches in charge.

Vieira faces mammoth task at Palace

Crystal Palace will be hoping their new manager, Patrick Vieira, can make a similarly positive impact at Selhurst Park but the Arsenal legend may find things a bit more difficult than his German counterpart.

The Eagles have let a host of their ageing first-team players leave on a free this summer and while a rejuvenation of the squad was well overdue it all seems to have been done in a hurry.

Andros Townsend, Gary Cahill, Scott Dann, James McCarthy, Mamadou Sakho and Patrick van Aanholt made 111 Premier League appearances between them last season and, while age was definitely catching up with them, that is a huge void to fill for the inexperienced manager.

Comfortable win for hosts expected

Palace lost six of their final eight league games last season and took up their customary position near the bottom of the goalscoring charts, with only Southampton, Wolves and Burnley of the surviving clubs scoring fewer than their 41 efforts.

They lost to nil on 11 occasions last season and since Tuchel arrived at Chelsea he has guided them to 15 wins to nil in all competitions, conceding just 17 goals in 31 matches. Backing them to get a comfortable 2-0 win against a side that have conceded two or more in seven of their last eight games looks appealing.

Kai Havertz is one to keep an eye on, too. The young German has scored in three of his last five competitive appearances for club and country and I fancy him to start the season with a goal on Saturday.

Chelsea predicted lineup: Mendy / Azpilicueta, Zouma, Rudiger / Hudson-Odoi, Kovacic, Kante, Alonso / Havertz, Mount / Werner

Crystal Palace predicted lineup: Guaita / Ward, Kouyate, Guehi, Mitchell / McArthur, Riedewald, Schlupp / Ayew, Zaha, Mateta

  • Chelsea have won their last seven Premier League clashes with Crystal Palace
  • Chelsea have won four of their last eight home league matches by a 2-0 scoreline
