Club Brugge vs Leuven Predictions

  • Club Brugge have won six of their last eight home cup ties with both teams scoring in five.
  • Club Brugge have scored and conceded in five of their eight domestic home games against top-flight opposition this season.
  • Leuven have scored in their last seven away games, including a 1-1 draw at Club Brugge in September.

Champions have scope to win at a canter

Club Brugge are expected to overcome Leuven to progress to the cup semi-finals on Thursday, but the visitors will certainly fancy their chances of scoring to provide hope for an upset. The Belgian champions are a few points off the top of the table heading into Christmas, but have that look of a team who are pacing themselves and still have another gear or two to shift into.

Phillipe Clement’s side score goals for fun in domestic competition and rattled four past Leuven when they met just over a week ago, so they will be as confident of victory as the oddsmakers are here. Leuven were outclassed on their home turf, but didn’t give up as they grabbed a late consolation in a 4-1 reverse.

Their approach barely differs when away from Den Dreef as Marc Brys’ side have scored in seven successive away games. They may have conceded 11 times during that sequence, but a 1-1 draw at Club Brugge in September and the recent 2-1 victory at table toppers Union suggest the set-up is working well for them.

Brugge forwards should keep goal return high

Both teams to score looks a goof play here, given it has landed in four of the last five head-to-head meetings, including one friendly. And, although they’re more than capable of an upset if things go their way, we’re sticking with the champions to get it done in 90 minutes as well. Key forward players like Charles De Ketelaere, Hans Vanaken and Noa Lang are in good form right now, so it would be foolish to look at anything other than a home win.

The correct score play that best suits this encounter is a 3-1 home win as Club Brugge have scored 15 (avg 2.5) and conceded six (avg 1.0) in their last six domestic home games.
