Deportivo La Coruna vs Sporting Gijon Predictions
Sporting have very much set their stall out to be solid at the back as they embark on their first season back in the top flight. It has worked reasonably well so far and they managed to restrict Real Madrid and Real Sociedad to 0-0 draws in the opening two weeks.
Last time out they went down to a 1-0 defeat at home to Valencia but still 2 points out of 3 isn’t bad considering they’ve faced two of last season’s top four and also visited the Anoeta, which is a tough place to go. This in theory should be their easiest game so far but with Deportivo starting so well, they are unlikely to revert from their ‘caution first’ approach.
It has been a really encouraging start from the Galician side, who ended last season strongly also. They have become very tough to beat since Victor Sanchez took charge and it is hard to see that changing here. Their 3-1 win away to Rayo Vallecano last weekend was perhaps the best performance so far under him.
However it was a little uncharacteristic and the gritty 0-0 and 1-1 draws they earned prior to that against Real Sociedad and Valencia were far more typical of them.
Given Sporting Gijon are yet to score in La Liga and that Deportivo aren’t usually prolific scorers either, you have to fancy this to be a low-scoring contest. Certainly backing at least one of these two to fail to find the back of the net at 4/6 is worth a punt.
Sporting Gijon, for all their hard work and endeavour just don’t look threatening in the final third. Therefore if there’s going to be a winner here you have to fancy the hosts to nick it and they are good value to win 1-0 at 9/2.
