Derry can dent Shamrock’s title charge
Shamrock Rovers head to Derry City in the Irish Premier Division on Friday night seeking to keep hold of their place at the top of the table.
Shamrock have amassed 38 points from their 19 games so far and lead the way in Ireland, although only a superior goal difference separates them from Sligo Rovers and St Patrick’s in second and third respectively.
Derry sit in sixth spot but are only five points off the European places, but they tend to fare better on their travels with 16 of their 25 points coming on the road.
Shamrock head into this fixture after a difficult week having seen their hopes of reaching the Champions League ended by Slovan Bratislava on Tuesday. The quick turnaround also works against them, and we feel Derry may be able to get a surprise result in this tie.
The Candystripes may only have nine points to show from their 10 home games but they’ve only lost three of those games, with one win and six draws. Indeed, Derry are unbeaten in their last five home games and have managed draws against high-fliers Sligo and St Patrick’s during that run so they may well be able to avoid defeat against a Shamrock outfit who could be suffering a European hangover on Friday.
Derry did win their last game at Brandywell Stadium against Waterford to secure their first home three points of the season but we’re going to play it safe and back the hosts to win or draw in the double chance market, while 1-1 looks a good option in the correct score market as five of their last eight home games have finished with that scoreline.
