East Kilbride vs St Mirren Predictions

Lowland League champions East Kilbride will host Premiership side St Mirren at home this weekend in their 2nd game of the Scottish League Cup. Can the Kilby cause an upset?

East Kilbride, resurrected back in 2010 after being defunct for over a century, start the new season off as the champions of the Lowland League, after the club was able to wrestle the title from the then defending champions Spartans. Although, Stuart Malcolm’s side were unable to work their way back into professional football after failing to impress in the play-offs.

The Kilby got their pre-season underway with a narrow 1-0 win over League Two outfit Stenhousemuir before playing in the League Cup for the first time this season. Saturday’s game brought no luck to the South Lanarkshire side, as they fell to Albion Rovers, although they only did so by a single goal.

St Mirren’s pre-season woes finally stopped growing following their 2nd game in the Scottish League Cup. Jim Goodwin’s side were almost held to a draw by League Two teams Edinburgh City but they defeated the capital club 1-0.

The Buddies were the owners of the ball for much of the match, holding onto 59% of possession, but the visitors were proving to be resilient and weren’t eager to give away much. Goodwin’s men had 12 shots, of which 6 were on target.

This was a much-needed win for the Paisley club, as they had failed to do so in any of their games since the Premiership season ended. St Mirren got away with not dropping back into the Championship after drawing twice with Dundee United in the relegation play-offs, suffering a couple of defeats in pre-season as well as also drawing with Stenhousemuir.

Despite a disastrous campaign in the league last season, St Mirren will be hoping to get back on track and gain some momentum going into the new campaign. They struggled to achieve their first win since May and last week’s game could just be what they need to try and top their League Cup group. Whilst East Kilbride may be champions of their division, they are by far the weaker team of this fixture and their opponents’ recent win might give them an extra boost. We’re going to back the visitors to win to nil here, as well as a final score of 3-0 for Goodwin’s side.
