Genoa face uphill task as survival hopes dwindle
Juventus have guaranteed a top-four Serie A finish after Roma dropped points against Bologna last Sunday, meaning Friday’s clash with Genoa will have greater ramifications at the bottom of the table, where Genoa are desperately trying to avoid dropping into Serie B after losing four of their last five games.
The most recent defeat suffered by Alexander Blessin’s men, a 1-0 derby reverse to Sampdoria, could be the most damaging yet, leaving them eight points below their local rivals and three points behind Cagliari. Blessin inspired some solidity when taking the job, as a run of seven consecutive draws demonstrates, but Genoa have failed to take advantage of that platform, failing to score in six of their last nine league games.
Juventus, meanwhile, have gone unbeaten in five matches since losing to Inter last month, winning four. The Bianconeri have only suffered defeat against the Nerazzurri and Villarreal since November 2021, and have achieved their goal of Champions League qualification in routine fashion. However, with a Coppa Italia final against Inter coming five days after this clash, the Bianconeri players will be desperate to play their way into Massimiliano Allegri’s plans.
Bianconeri to push hosts closer to the brink
Genoa’s recent spate of defeats looks increasingly likely to prove crucial in their fight against the drop, with Blessin’s men facing difficult games against third-placed Napoli and in-form Bologna after this contest.
With that in mind, Genoa will have to go for it against the Bianconeri, who have arguably been at their best when allowed to counter-attack into space this term. Juventus look a sure-fire bet for a sixth consecutive away win, and a repeat of December’s 2-0 win over Genoa appears a strong correct score play.
