Reason For Espanyol vs Atletico Madrid Predictions

  • Espanyol remain bottom of La Liga following last weekend’s 2-1 defeat at Real Valladolid.
  • Periquitos have won just one of their 12 home matches in La Liga this term, losing seven.
  • Atletico Madrid have won three and drawn one of their last four games in all competitions. Los Colchoneros moved up to third on Matchday 25 with a 3-1 home victory against Villarreal.

Atleti win through top four six-pointer

Atletico Madrid squared off against fellow top four challengers Villarreal in one of the standout fixtures on Matchday 25, and it was Diego Simeone’s side who eventually won through a shade cosily at Wanda Metropolitano thanks to second half goals from Koke and Joao Felix.

After briefly dropping out of the Champions League places a few weeks ago, Los Colchoneros are now back up into third place as a result of their 3-1 victory over The Yellow Submarine and a four point haul from their previous two league outings against Granada (1-0) and Valencia (2-2).

But with fifth placed Getafe just a single point in arrears, Atleti can’t afford to rest on their laurels when they take on bottom side Espanyol this Sunday, particularly as they face another key fixture against fourth placed Sevilla next weekend.

Los Colchoneros are unsurprisingly rated favourites by the bookmakers to land the spoils and they will be confident of doing so despite winning just three of their 12 away league matches this season.

Espanyol five points adrift

Espanyol have worked extremely hard and earned some decent results in recent weeks to bring themselves within touching distance of safety, but they suffered a huge set back away to Real Valladolid on Matchday 25.

After appearing on course for a point Jose Zorrilla, Abelardo’s side were undone by late goals from Sandro Ramirez and Sergi Guardiola, leaving them now five points behind 17th placed Celta Vigo who claimed a priceless 1-0 success at home to 19th placed Leganes.

Espanyol responded well at home to Wolves in the Europa League on Thursday to win 3-2 at RCDE Stadium, ensuring they at least exited that competition on a positive note following their 4-0 first leg hammering at Molineux.

But the pressure is really on Periquitos to get something this Sunday and it’s difficult to fancy the hosts against La Liga’s toughest outfit with such a quick turnaround. Espanyol have won just one of their 12 home league matches this season, losing seven, while they were comfortably beaten 3-1 by their opponents in November’s return fixture.

Atleti well priced to improve travelling record

As previously outlined, Atletico Madrid have hardly pulled up any trees on the road this term and they head to Barcelona this weekend with just one win from their last nine away starts in La Liga.

However, their 2-2 draw at Valencia last time out was a marked improvement from Simeone’s side compared to prior efforts on their travels, while they seem to be turning the corner in general after excellent victories against Villarreal and Liverpool.

Atleti won both of their away fixtures against the other bottom three teams earlier in the campaign and they are well priced here to get the better of Espanyol, despite the fact that the hosts are unbeaten in four league games at RCDE Stadium.

We’re anticipating a tight contest as is usually the case with league games involving Atletico Madrid (76% producing fewer than 2.5 goals this term), so we’re also backing Los Colchoneros to prevail 0-1 as they look to bank their 12th clean sheet of the La Liga season.
