Espanyol vs Sevilla Predictions
Sevilla’s reputation as a cup side has continued again this year. They are only 7th in La Liga with a considerably lesser points tally than they had at the same point last year but heading into May they remain in with a chance of lifting two cups. They drew 2-2 at Shakhtar Donetsk on Thursday in the Europa League Semi Final 1st Leg and will be confident of making their 3rd straight final when the teams meet again next week. They will certainly have an eye on that game here and we can expect them to rest a few players with European qualification for next year all but guaranteed even if they fail to win either the Copa del Rey or Europa League. They did win at home to city rivals Real Betis last weekend but their league form hasn’t been good of late and they lost 2-1 at relegation threatened Sporting Gijon in their most recent away game.
Espanyol are another side who haven’t been as strong this season and with 3 games to go they may still need a few more points to stay up. A win here would all but guarantee it so this is a big game for the Catalans, particularly given they travel across Barcelona to Camp Nou next weekend. They have a 5 point advantage on the bottom 3 going into the weekend but that could quickly disappear if they fail to win this and assuming they lose against Barca next week, they’d almost certainly still be in danger going into the final day which they’d clearly like to avoid.
Espanyol are winless in 5 matches and were hammered 4-0 at Las Palmas last week. However they’ve been playing reasonably well at home of late, drawing with 5th place Celta Vigo last time out on their own patch. They also beat 6th place Athletic Bilbao at the end of March and are capable of getting the better of Sevilla here. Considering Sevilla will have one eye on their European game next week and may be a little tired from their long trip to Ukraine on Thursday, this could be a good time to play them. Add to that the small matter of them having failed to win all season away from home in La Liga and backing Espanyol Draw No Bet at 4/6 looks like a very safe bet here.
