Reason For FC Porto vs Belenenses Predictions

Porto were edged out of the Taca da Liga Final by Sporting CP in midweek and need to bounce back with a win in the Primeira Liga at home to Belenenses on Wednesday. The visitors are flying high in fifth place, but remain nine points behind four placed Sporting CP and are unlikely to finish any higher in the table this season.

A very tight and tense Taca da Liga Final saw FC Porto take the lead through substitute Fernando in the seventy-ninth minute, after good work from teammate Marega. That goal looked to have won the game for Porto, up until stoppage time when Sporting were awarded a penalty and top scorer Dost equalised. Sporting held their nerve during the penalty shoot-out, missing just one of their four spot kicks, while Felipe, Hernâni, and Militão all missed for Porto, handing their rivals their second Taca da Liga trophy.

Belenenses haven’t played since the 2-2 draw with struggling Tondela on the 19th January, where Almeida scored after just two minutes to put the hosts in front. Tondela hit back before the break to take the lead thanks to goals from Bruno Monteiro and Tómané. Belenenses responded well after the break and got back onto level terms three minutes into the second half through that man Almeida again, and were presented with a fantastic opportunity to claim all three points when the hosts were awarded a penalty in the eighty-first minute, but Fredy fluffed his lines and the game ended 2-2.

Porto may have lost in midweek and have only had a fraction of the time to prepare and recuperate for this game compared to their guests, but they have beaten Belenenses in five of their last six encounters and we’re expecting another comfortable victory for Porto on Wednesday. The hosts have only kept one clean sheet in their last six matches in all competitions, but we believe they will stop Belenenses from scoring on Wednesday, as they have done in four of their last seven matches against this particular opponent. Belenenses head into the game unbeaten in their last three matches, but Porto are the form favourites having won four, drawn one, and lost one of their last six.

Brazil’s Tiquinho top scores for the hosts with eight Primeira Liga goals so far this season, but teammate Marega is just one behind on seven. Fredy, who missed that penalty in Belenenses’ last match, leads the way in front of goal for the visitors with six goals, three of which have come from the penalty spot. Almeida and Licá have both chipped in with five league goals each and will cause the Porto defense problems with their movement in and around the box.

We’re confident that Porto will win to nil on Wednesday, and have backed a final scoreline of two goals to nil. The hosts will be looking to get back on track after losing in the cup, and their excellent record against this particular opponent will give Porto the edge. Belenenses haven’t won at Porto since 2001, and despite a good season so far, we don’t believe the visitors have what it takes to even pickup a draw on Wednesday.
