Genoa vs Cagliari Predictions

  • Genoa have only won one of their last 30 Serie A games.
  • The hosts have managed seven draws in their last 11 matches, but have suffered defeat in each of their last three.
  • Cagliari ended a five-match losing streak with a deserved win over Sassuolo last time out.
  • Cagliari’s six-point lead over Genoa means they could play for a draw on Sunday.

Massive six-pointer beckons as Serie B beckons for Genoa

19th-placed Genoa trail Cagliari by six points as the end of the Serie A season approaches, meaning Sunday’s clash between the two could be the single most important game yet in Italy’s relegation battle. A win for the hosts could reinvigorate the survival hopes of themselves, Venezia, and Salernitana, but a victory for the Sardinian team would go a long way to condemning all three to Serie B.

Alexander Blessin certainly instilled a solid streak upon taking the Genoa job, drawing each of his first seven matches at the helm, but three consecutive losses (admittedly to tough opponents in Verona, Lazio, and Milan), have left their survival prospects looking bleak. Although Genoa won at Cagliari earlier this season, they’ve won just one of their 30 league games since, and have just one win from their 16 home league games (drawn eight, lost seven).

Cagliari, meanwhile, could have been in an even worse position after slipping from a five-match unbeaten run at the turn of the year to a five-match losing streak more recently. However, the poor form of the current bottom three, as well as a deserved 1-0 win over Sassuolo, has given Walter Mazzarri’s men a cushion over the bottom three, and they could even view a draw as a decent result on Sunday.

Sardinians have the edge after establishing six-point buffer

Cagliari’s six-point lead over Genoa gives them greater freedom in how to approach this monumental encounter, with a draw likely enough to condemn Genoa to relegation. Meanwhile, Cagliari have actually avoided defeat on three of their last five road trips.

With that in mind, we’re backing the visitors for a result on the double chance market, while a tense 1-1 draw could be a decent correct score prediction, given Genoa’s love of a stalemate.
