Reason For Genoa vs Cagliari Predictions

  • Cagliari drew 100% of their last three Serie A matches.
  • Cagliari have drawn more games (eight) than any other club in Serie A this season.
  • Cagliari shared the spoils in six of their last 10 away fixtures.
  • Genoa took a point from each of their last two Serie A assigments.

Genoa fighting for survival

Both Genoa and Cagliari are in dire need of a win ahead of their Serie A clash at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris on Sunday afternoon.

Relegation threatened Genoa are three points adrift of safety after 22 rounds of Italian top flight fixtures and Il Grifone have won only once in Serie A since late October last year.

Genoa appointed former player Davide Nicola in late December last year in an attempt to spark a domestic revival, though the new manager bounce lasted for just one game.

After beating Sassuolo in Nicola’s first game in charge on January 5th, Genoa haven’t won since, however draws in each of their last two outings in tough away assignments at Fiorentina and Atalanta suggest that there are simmering signs of improvement.

Cagliari on the slide

Their opponents this weekend Cagliari, are in a slump of their own, and their steep downward drift has seen them fail to win nine games in league and cup.

Having threatened to make a surprising top four push earlier in the campaign, their dramatic downturn in results means that 6th placed Cagliari are now a full seven points off Atalanta in 4th.

In the midst of their poor run, Cagliari were beaten a harrowing five times on the spin between the middle of December and the middle of January, though Gli Isolani did recover to draw each of their last three matches against Brescia, Inter and Parma.

Teams to settle for a point each?

Draw specialists Cagliari, have in fact, finished level more often than any other team in Serie A this term, sharing the spoils in eight of the 22 matches they have contested so far since August.

Genoa sit just behind them in the draw stakes with seven stalemates, and with both clubs lacking the confidence and momentum to push hard for victory on Sunday, we think a draw is the likeliest outcome again.

Genoa are averaging a point per game at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris this season, and we’re backing them to grab another against a Cagliari outfit that have finished level in 100% of their last three fixtures and in six of their last 10 games on the road.

Il Grifone are also averaging just 1.1 goals per game on their own patch in 2019/20, though they conceded just once at the other end in three of their last five matches at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris too – numbers that suggest a deluge of penalty area drama is extremely unlikely on Sunday.

Cagliari scored exactly one goal in three of their last five games on the road, scoring more than once just twice in their last eight attempts overall. With goals looking hard to come by for both clubs, a goal a piece looks like the upper limit of their attacking capabilities at present, and that is why we’re forecasting a correct score of 1-1 this weekend.
