Tip Reasoning
Gent lost for the first time since their return from the winter break on Saturday as AS Eupen came to town and left with a 1-0 victory under their belts. This makes it two wins, two draws, and one defeat since they returned to action. That isn’t exactly a spectacular run of form, but it’s a lot better than their four straight defeats that they ended the first half of the campaign with.
In all honesty it’s been a pretty torrid season for Gent domestically. Their numerous patches of poor form has left them 8th in the Belgian First Division, 20 points adrift of their final tally in the regular season last term and with just four games left to play.
The Europa League group stages went rather well though, despite them only picking up eight points from their six matches. They still managed to outdo Sporting Braga in 3rd to qualify for this stage of the tournament, although they were some way off the perfect record of Shakhtar Donetsk at the top.
Tottenham also saw their unbeaten run come to an abrupt end at the weekend as Liverpool beat them 2-0 at Anfield to resign them to their first defeat since the middle of December. They have won nine and drawn two of their 11 games in all competitions since then, but it leaves them ten points adrift of Premier League leaders Chelsea and they have dropped down to 3rd now as well.
Spurs’ Champions League campaign didn’t go to plan either, with a terrible start at Wembley leaving them with just seven points from their six group games. This saw them finish 3rd, three points adrift of Bayer Leverkusen in 2nd.
This was probably a worse outcome for them than finishing bottom, as it means their rapidly dwindling hopes of lifting the Premier League will be distracted by the Europa League. The race for the top four is close this season as well, so I would imagine this competition will take more of a back seat and we could see some squad rotation.
The visitors away form hasn’t been the best this season either, with just two of their last 13 games in all competitions ending in victory. Gent will be much more focused on this match than Spurs in my opinion, and that alongside Spurs’ poor away record makes odds of 11/10 for a Gent Win or Draw Double Chance look good value for money. I’m backing that alongside a 1-1 correct score predictions at 11/2.
