Godoy Cruz vs Sport Boys Warnes Predictions

Godoy Cruz have the chance to put one foot in the last 16 with a victory here. They’ve taken 4 points from their opening two group stage games, drawing 1-1 at home with Atletico Mineiro and recording an excellent 2-1 win at Libertad in the last round of fixtures. The side should be confident in getting the job done, with opponents Sport Boys looking like crashing out in what’s their first ever continental appearance, having only collected 1 point from a possible 6 so far.

Although Godoy Cruz’s win in Paraguay was impressive, it was a very fortunate one. They were dominated for most of the game, with goalkeeper Rodrigo Rey keeping them in the tie, allowing Angel Gonzalez to go on to steal the points in the last minute. The Mendoza based outfit were far more impressive in their 3-1 win over Banfield at the weekend however; fighting back from a goal down to take the 3 points. Eyes are now firmly set on the Libertadores, with any sort of success in the league out of the question, as they currently sit 16th.

Meanwhile, this should have been a special season for Sport Boys; but it’s been dogged by off the field issues. Unpaid wages have lead to players revolting, refusing to meet prior to some games and some even threatening legal action. It’s not been much better on the pitch either, with the side currently sitting 8th out of 12, only taking 13 points from 10 games and conceding 21 goals in the process.

Godoy Cruz are massive favourites for this one, and if they can deal with the pressure of that, it just becomes a question of by how big the winning margin will be. The Sport Boys defence is porous, having conceded 21 goals domestically and eight in their two Libertadores games so far.

Backing goals here is a must, Godoy Cruz will be hungry for the points and Sport Boys don’t really have any other option than to set themselves out for the win given the current outlook of the group. For all their defensive problems Sport Boys are still a threat going forward and having worried Atletico Mineiro by breaching their net twice  they can be confident of giving the Argentine’s plenty to think about it. We see them getting on the scoresheet but it’s unlikely to count for much, as the hosts cruise to a 3-1 win.
