Grimsby’s Goal Drought

Three defeats in a row has seen Grimsby surrender top spot in the National League, but they took a step in the right direction by scoring their first goal in four games against Aldershot last time out.

Yet, although they have been struggling to hit the back of the net, Paul Hurst ought not to have too many worries about his side’s defending.

Only five of the fifteen goals they have conceded have come at Blundell Park, where they have kept four clean sheets, while four of their seven fixtures on home soil have seen fewer than three goals.

Southend’s Wretched Away Run

Southend remain in deep trouble in the National League relegation zone, with a run of a five successive defeats away from Roots Hall compounding their struggles.

New manager Kevin Maher has seen his side score just five goals in his five games in charge, but four of them came in a thrashing of Dover, meaning they have failed to hit the back of the net in 60% of his fixtures.

It is difficult to see how they are going to turn things around in this long trip to a ground where historically the Shrimpers have struggled, so I predict a narrow 1-0 defeat.
