Millwall can strike first in promotion battle

The first Championship play-off semi final fixture takes place on Friday night as Hull host Millwall at the MKM Stadium.

Millwall overcame relegated Oxford 2-0 in the final round of fixtures but narrowly missed out on automatic promotion as Ipswich also won. Hull managed to cling on to their top six place thanks to a win over Norwich, ending a six-game winless run.

If the Lions can get over their disappointment of missing out on the top two quickly they look well placed to see off Hull and they can make the perfect start with a first leg win before these sides reconvene in London for the return fixture.

Millwall won the corresponding league game 3-1 in March and have been in fine form, particularly on their travels as they have six wins and no defeats in their last nine trips.

In contrast, the Tigers limped over the line and they had to dig deep against a Canaries side who had nothing at stake in their last game of the regular season. Hull have been better at home, but they’ve still lost four of their last nine at this venue and Millwall’s away record suggests they can get the job done.

Millwall won 3-1 here in March but they may have to settle for a one-goal advantage going into the second leg and a 2-1 Lions win seems a reasonable correct score prediction. Hull have only conceded more than two goals in one of their last 10 games since the last meeting, while Millwall have only scored more than twice in one of their last 10. The visitors have also conceded exactly one goal in five of their last six trips and both teams have scored in five consecutive Hull games.

Femi Azeez has hit some form for Millwall with three goals in three games and he stands out as a contender for an anytime effort at Hull.
