Italy face minnows Malta

Italy take on Malta in a Euro 2024 qualifier on Saturday in a fixture that is tough to navigate from a betting perspective.

It is almost unthinkable that the hosts fail to win this game and the odds reflect that, with Italy the heavy odds-on favourites.

Aside from a 4-0 defeat to England, Malta haven’t suffered any heavy losses but they have managed just one goal in five games themselves – so backing Italy to win a reasonably low-scoring game may be the way forward.

Italy have tougher test to come

The hosts need maximum points here as they bid to stay ahead of Ukraine and North Macedonia, with those three sides locked on seven points, but they also have a huge game against England to come next week.

That could see the Italians ease off after taking a 2-0 lead, and with Malta conceding on average a respectable 2.2 goals-per-game backing the hosts to win and under 3.5 goals looks the best option for our main bet.

A Malta goal looks unlikely, and as such a repeat of the reverse fixture 2-0 win for Italy is the score prediction. Italy have only scored more than twice in two of their last 15 games and may well sit back if they do go two goals ahead, with a view to next week’s meeting with the Three Lions.
