Leeds left to rue first-half misses

Leeds were left to rue missed opportunities against Manchester City on Saturday, but can bounce back with a home win when Sunderland travel south this week. Daniel Farke’s side posed Pep Guardiola’s team plenty of problems in the first half before an unfortunate turn of events saw them fall behind.

City eventually got to grips with Farke’s front-footed formation and held on for a vital three points in the title race while Sunderland earned a solid away point at in-form Bournemouth earlier in the day.

There were 24 points between these clubs last season in the Championship, but the Black Cats won the summer transfer window and have rarely looked in relegation trouble this term. There is now a six-point gap between Regis Le Bris’ side and the Whites, but that could be halved on Tuesday.

Black Cats lack cutting edge

Leeds had the better of a 1-1 draw on Weirside earlier this season when Farke’s man dominated the shot count 17-8 while doubling Sunderland’s number of touches in the opposition box and tripling their expected goals (xG).

The Black Cats’ goal that day came when a visibly struggling Joe Rodon was caught playing Simon Adingra onside. The home side created very little else and that lack of cutting edge has been a running theme in their recent away league games.

Sunderland have scored only two goals in their last four Premier League away trips — to Brentford, West Ham, Arsenal and Bournemouth. They have not scored more than once on their travels in all competitions since a famous 2-1 win at Stamford Bridge in October

Calvert-Lewin keeps getting chances

They are probably going to have to register more than one goal to take all three points at Elland Road, where Leeds have scored in 10 of their 12 home league games. Only the two title contenders have shut them out and Man City came dangerously close to conceding on a few occasions.

Farke’s side began the campaign with back-to-back home clean sheets, but have managed only one since then, so the win to nil option is not going to attract much cash. But with three goals apiece in home games against Liverpool, Chelsea and Nottingham Forest, plus four against Palace, it is possible that they can take the points with both teams on the scoresheet.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who missed teh two best chances they created on Saturday, continues to deliver solid performances and looks a good anytime goalscorer selection in a possible 2-1 home win.
