Oldham vs Notts County Predictions

It is probably fair to say that 2018 has been a year to forget for Notts County as despite their hopes of being in the hunt for the League Two title, they have ended the year in a position which sees their spot in the Football League under threat. This New Years Day, they have the opportunity to take a step towards safety when they make the trip to face off against an Oldham Athletic side who also had a less than impressive calendar year.

Oldham Athletic bounced back from their humiliating 6-0 defeat at Carlisle United on Boxing Day by beating Port Vale 4-1 away, and they will be hoping to build on that success in their first match of 2019. The hosts sacked manager Frankie Bunn after just six months in charge following that 6-0 defeat. The ex-Latics striker had previously replaced Richie Wellens on a one-year deal in June after relegation to League Two, but he was unable to turn the fortunes of his side around and the club made the decision to go in a different direction.

Notts County picked up four points in their last four League Two matches but remain rooted to the foot of the table after 25 games this season. It has been a season to forget for Notts County so far and the fact that they are already on their third manager of the season probably tells you all you need to know. The visitors have found things difficult on their travels so far this term and they have managed to claim just one win away from home so far. It is a record which is a major part of their troubles but they have shown signs of progression of late and, whilst far from the finished article, there is small signs of the green shoots of recovery.

This meeting is a clash which is more than just your typical match in the fourth division of English football, it also represents a meeting between two sides who look like they have hit rock bottom and are starting to build themselves back up. Given that neither side has been particularly adept at keeping the opposition at bay so far, we think that backing there to be over 2.5 goals scored looks to be the way to go.
