Longford Town vs Sligo Rovers Predictions
This season is turning into an absolute disaster for Longford Town. Last season’s 6th place finishers in the League of Ireland Premier Division currently find themselves rock bottom of the table with a measly eight points accumulated from their 19 league games so far.
They have won just once so far this season, a 2-0 win against Wexford Youths all the way back in March on the opening day of the season. Since then they have managed an Irish FA Cup win against Waterford United but they’ve had no success in the Premier Division. They have lost five of their last six in the league, drawing once.
Last time out Longford Town lost 4-0 against Derry City to follow on from a 4-3 defeat to Dundalk. Their last vaguely positive result was at the start of June when they earned a point from a goalless draw at Bray Wanderers. Interestingly, the majority of their draws have come away from home and, at home, they have lost five in a row and only picked up two points from a possible 27 this season.
Sligo Rovers only dodged the relegation playoff last season by two points, but this season they have managed to improve so far. They come into this match in 7th position in the table, already 11 points clear of the relegation playoff position and 15 points clear of Longford Town.
Last time out they managed to beat St Patrick’s Athletic 1-0 to make it four wins, one draw, and one defeat in their last six outings in all competitions. In the Premier Division they have won six, drawn one, and lost two of their last nine, which has gone a long way towards making up for a dreadful start to the season which saw them fail to win any of their first eight games.
Away from home they have won two of their last four but they will feel very confident of adding to that win tally on Saturday. Five of Longford Town’s nine home games this season have seen them lose by more than a single goal as well, with four of those comprehensive defeats coming in the last five matches.
Because of this, and the fact that Longford Town have already managed to concede 44 league goals this season, my prediction is for a Sligo Rovers -1.0 Asian Handicap Win at 1.875, and I’m also going for a 2-0 correct score prediction at 11/2.
