Lyon vs Sevilla Predictions
This is one of the more significant Champions League ties of the final round of group games. Coming into this, Sevilla currently hold the advantage with a three point lead on 3rd placed Lyon. They have already beaten them 1-0 at home as well and have a slightly superior goal difference, which means that Lyon need to win this one by at least two goals to leapfrog their Spanish counterparts.
Sevilla, meanwhile, are hoping for an unlikely Dinamo Zagreb result in the other match in the group which would allow them to steal the top spot from Juventus with a victory.
Lyon’s weekend was quite eventful as well after their match against Metz was suspended after just 30 minutes thanks to the idiocy of the home fans. Metz supporters threw firecrackers at goalkeeper Anthony Lopes, one of which put him on the ground with the following one exploding right next to him. As a result he is out of action in midweek and Metz could be forced to surrender the match to Lyon.
Prior to this Lyon had thrashed Nantes 6-0 in midweek to make it five wins, one draw, and one defeat in their last seven outings in all competitions. This has pushed them up to 5th in Ligue 1, but they are still being held back by a patch of awful form during star man Alexandre Lacazette’s injury.
Lacazette scored one of Lyon’s six in midweek to take his tally to 12 goals in 14 appearances in all competitions this season. On the Lyon side of things he looks by far the best choice for our anytime goalscorer predictions.
Sevilla suffered a disappointing 2-1 defeat at Granada on Saturday to make it three losses and three wins from their last six games in all competitions. This was their first away defeat since September, and they will be hoping it doesn’t lead to a run of poor form on the road at a crucial stage of their European season.
Sevilla’s main problem on Wednesday is that they need to be solid at the back, which is something they have struggled with away from home this season. They have conceded 11 goals in their last seven trips away and have kept just one clean sheet in the process. On the other side of things they have scored in every one of these games, whilst Lyon have conceded in six of their last eight at home.
This, plus the high stakes of the match, make odds of 4/5 for Both Teams to Score look a good choice, and that’s what I’m backing alongside a 2-1 win for Lyon at 17/2 which would see them resigned to Europa League football.
