Lyon can overturn last week’s defeat

Lyon fell to a 2-1 defeat in Prague last week, with Corentin Tolisso missing a penalty before John Mercado struck to hand Sparta a first-leg victory.

Champions League qualifying has been tough for French sides; four of the last five to enter have failed to make it to the competition proper. However, Lyon should be able to avoid that fate in this round, as their home results in last season’s Europa League were strong.

Lyon scored twice or more in all four of their home League Phase matches in Europe’s second-tier competition last season. In the knockout stages on the 2024/25 Europa League, they put four goals past FCSB and drew 2-2 with Manchester United.

Sparta Prague were beaten 6-1 on aggregate in the last 16 of the Conference League last season, and they should fall short against a strong Lyon side on Tuesday.
