FSV Mainz 05 vs Union Berlin Predictions
- Union Berlin have lost six of their last seven away games
- Mainz have won six of their last ten matches
- Both teams have scored in the last six rivalries
Mainz can make hay at home
There is not much riding on this Bundesliga clash from the Mewa Arena, with Mainz on course for a mid-table finish after a late resurgence and Union Berlin seven points clear of safety with only two games left to play.
Mainz snapped a three-game winless run with last weekend’s 2-1 success at St Pauli and they should be able to build on that at home to Union Berlin, who have taken only two points from their last six matches.
The visitors have lost six of their last seven away league games and more misery could follow as Mainz are far more capable than their tenth-placed position implies.
Urs Fischer’s side were in relegation trouble earlier in the campaign but they have been transformed since the turn of the year, winning six of their last ten matches.
Even in Mainz’s last home game, they pushed champions Bayern hard in a 4-3 defeat and they should have too much firepower for Union Berlin, who have won on only one of their last five trips to the Mewa Arena.
Travel-sick Union Berlin tough to trust
Union Berlin have lost ten of their 16 away league games, leaking 31 goals, and Mainz should put them to the sword.
That said, Union Berlin have failed to score in only two of their last nine road outings and both teams have scored on six occasions, so they may be able to grab a consolation strike.
With both teams having also netted in the last six meetings and the pair allowed to play with the shackles off, taking Mainz to win 2-1 may be the way to go.
