Manchester City vs Burnley Predictions
- Manchester City have kept nine clean sheets in the last 11 Premier League meetings with Burnley
- Burnley have sustained four Premier League defeats by three goals or more
- Kevin De Bruyne netted from the bench against Newcastle recently
- Manchester City have won the last eight meetings between these two teams to nil
City reunion for Kompany
Vincent Kompany returns to the Etihad Stadium for the first time as a Premier League manager when Burnley visit Manchester City on Wednesday but it hard to make the case for the club legend taking anything from this clash.
The Clarets are five points from safety having taken 12 points from their first 21 games of the season and there have been relatively few positives to take from the campaign, they have the second-worst defensive record and have scored the second-fewest goals.
Their record against Manchester City makes for grim reading too, they have lost the last 12 meetings between the pair, conceding 43 and scoring once in that run. The Citizens seem to be hitting top gear again, as they always tend to do at this time of year.
Pep Guardiola’s side have won nine of their last ten matches in all competitions and have edged out two important away victories in their last two matches, beating Newcastle in the league and Totteham in the FA Cup.
The hosts are now five points behind Liverpool in the title race with a game in hand and with the Reds facing a tougher test against Chelsea, they will be hoping to cut the lead even further.
Clarets likely to struggle
By contrast, Burnley have lost ten of their last 14 league games and while they may be fresh after over two weeks without a match, it is hard to see how they get anything out of this dominant Manchester City outfit.
The gap between these two teams is large and could well be on full show here, City may also be able to call upon Erling Haaland, who is working his way back to full fitness after sustaining an ankle injury.
If he does return it’s likely to be from the bench but it helps that Guardiola’s side now have very few injury concerns while Burnley have seven potential absentees for this clash.
Given the head-to-head record of these two teams and the respective seasons they are having, it is hard to see beyond a win to nil for the hosts, who are unbeaten at the Etihad Stadium this season.
De Bruyne’s return is key
The return of Kevin De Bruyne could be key for the destination of this season’s title, he already had a galvanising effect on the Citizens’ season when he netted and recorded an assist in their 3-2 win over Newcastle recently.
The Belgian is a such a key player for the home team and may feature from the start here, he looks a decent bet to get on the scoresheet.
For correct score backers, take note of the fact that four of Manchester City’s last six matches in all competitions have gone over 3.5 goals and take a 4-0 home win.
