Marseille vs Strasbourg Predictions

  • Marseille have failed to win their last two home games.
  • Strasbourg have avoided defeat in eight of their last ten Ligue 1 away games (Won 4, Drawn 4).
  • A draw would keep Marseille in third if Rennes beat Lille and a point is enough for Strasbourg to earn European football if Nice can’t beat Reims.

Weary Marseille may not resist ever-ready Racers

Marseille are in danger of becoming their own worst enemy as the Ligue 1 season wraps up with the visit of European-chasing Strasbourg and they attempt to pip Monaco to second spot. Les Phoceens are looking weary after a long campaign that saw them play both Europa League and Conference League football.

This will be their 56th competitive match of the campaign – compared to just the 40th for their guests – and anyone who witnessed their last two home games can see this is a squad that has run its race already. Jorge Sampaoli’s side were dismantled 3-0 in front of their own fans by Lyon and then, with a European Final to play for, drew 0-0 with Feyenoord in a game they needed to win.

Dimitri Payet’s loss to injury came at a bad time and so too now has Sampaoli’s apparent lack of faith in leading striker Arkadiusz Milik, whom the coach left on the bench unused during last week’s 2-0 loss at Rennes. Rather like his midwinter shunning of top centre back Alvaro Gonzalez, this has the feeling of the beginning of the end of their relationship one way or another.

Strasbourg finishing the season strongly

With all that running in the background, it seems folly to expect Marseille to overcome a fresher, highly-motivated and in-form Strasbourg side on the last day. The Racers need a result to lock up fifth place and the Conference League qualifiers spot that goes with it.

Julien Stephan’s side must match or better what Nice do at Reims in order to be sure of finishing fifth, so will be keyed up for the culmination of a season’s work. Marseille won’t go back above Monaco unless they perform too, but may be powerless to overhaul the Principality club if Phillipe Clement’s men are winning at Lens, so that could work in Strasbourg’s favour here.

Having avoided defeat in eight of their last ten Ligue 1 away games, winning four and drawing four, our belief is that Strasbourg will get what they need from this game and the fact that a draw may be enough has us reaching for the double chance bet. A 1-1 correct score play could prove profitable if the two sides play out the final minutes watchfully, knowing the outcome could ensure both teams get all they can realistically get out of the fixture.
