Melbourne City vs Central Coast Mariners Predictions

Melbourne City come into the game top of the A-League after four games, one of only two clubs who remain unbeaten. The goals of Jamie Maclaren in the early rounds gave them a great platform to build on but they proved last weekend that they can still find the net without their talisman as they scored three against Wellington Phoenix.

Central Coast Mariners pulled off the shock of the season so far last weekend, when they beat Perth Glory in the west, putting themselves firmly in mid table, ahead of the likes of Melbourne Victory and Adelaide United.

You can expect goals with these two sides with all of their last 3 games seeing both teams score and only one fixture (Central Coast v Newcastle Jets) failing to beat the 2.5 goal line. The strength of Melbourne City makes us think that the handicap market represents a lot more value however, with the home side well priced to win the game with a -1 handicap.

Melbourne City have scored 7 goals in their last 3 games and will be looking to add to that total against a Mariners side that many predicted would struggle this season. The hosts seem to have goals throughout their side with Metcalfe and Noone both scoring from midfield last week, and with Melbourne City averaging 6.25 shots on target so far this season they will be confident of creating the chances they need.

Central Coast Mariners are performing a little above expectations so far this season with their win against Perth Glory last weekend giving them 4 points from 3 games but the two sides look a world apart in performance levels so far. The visitors have only managed an average of 3 shots on target per game this season and whilst they’ve managed to score in each of their matches so far they could struggle more against a strong Melbourne City defence.

A scoreline of Melbourne City 3-1 Central Coast Mariners seems about fair with the home side looking to have too much talent offensively for their rivals whilst Central Coast will be more concerned with having a strong base, happily leaving with a point. It will be interesting to see how quickly the away side look to attack their rivals and a quick start could be key for Central Coast getting anything from the match. It’s hard to look past Melbourne City this weekend though and they should comfortably pick up the win.
