Metz can taste Ligue 1 return

Metz’s ambition of an immediate return to the French top flight after relegation from Ligue 1 last term could be realised on Friday night with a win over Bastia on the final day of the Ligue 2 season.

Metz defeated Sochaux 1-0 last time out to move into the second and last automatic promotion place, three points behind league leaders Le Harve and only ahead of third-placed Bordeaux on goal difference.

The Maroons could therefore still be crowned Ligue 2 champions or miss out on promotion entirely depending on the outcome of Friday’s final day clash. Of the three promotion hopefuls, Metz are predicted to face the toughest encounter against an in-form Bastia team sat fourth after two wins from their last three games.

Bastia unlikely to roll over

Bastia have lost just two of their last ten games so won’t make life easy for Metz, who lost the reverse fixture 1-0, a scoreline that’s occurred in half of the last ten meetings between these sides.

It seems unlikely this latest encounter will break that mould of low-scoring encounters with only five of Metz’s 18 home games this season going over 2.5 goals, while 24 of Bastia’s 37 league games have featured fewer than three goals.

Metz’s push for promotion has seen them grind out a number of low-scoring wins at home and that pattern is predicted to be repeated here with a sixth 1-0 win over the campaign.
